“Friendship is the hardest thing in the world to explain. It’s not something you learn in school. But if you haven’t learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven’t learned anything.”
– Muhammad Ali
You know how people say they can’t really define pornography but they know it when they see it?
Friendship is a little like that for me.
You can paint a pretty description for What A Good Friend Looks Like if you want – loyal, loving, trustworthy, generous, fun, caring, honest, kind, often rowdy, forgiving – the list goes on and on.
But for me the truest test of friendship is in the feelings.
Do you rejoice at their successes? Feel pain for their disappointments? Shake a fist at an injustice that befalls them?
Can you already feel their reaction when you have joyous news to share? When you hear they’re in trouble, are you halfway to their house before thinking twice about going? Do you know deep down in your bones when they need you, even when they haven’t said a word?
It’s always the feelings that tell me when I’ve made a true friend. I know a lot of good people, and with time some of those might even turn into these kinds of friendships…but I think we all know that real, honest, genuine friends are few and far between.
I love the photo of the children – reminds me of one that I took of my girls.
