Wanting something to quench your thirst, what would you drink?

I’m trying to drink more water because, you know, health and such.  But I’m also terrible about water because at heart I’m just a petulant four-year-old, stamping my foot and fussing why do I have to drink water, I hate water so I tend to add those Propel flavor packs.  It helps.

With meals my beverages of choice are diet Dr. Pepper and light beer.  (‘Cuz health.)

If you could be given any gift what would it be?

It would be a gift to be able to approach any problem, any situation with a mind at peace with itself.  That would open an entire world of possibilities.

What do you do if you can’t sleep at night?  Do you count sheep, toss and turn, or get up and try to do something productive?

I’ve got a limited window for putting myself back to sleep.  If it’s just that my brain is spinning then I try numbers – counting backwards from 100 by sevens or threes.  If I’ve had a bad dream then I imagine that scene from Willy Wonka where he first takes the kids into the factory and they run around tasting things.  (Yes, seriously, I can recreate that scene and even sing the song from it.)

At a certain point, though, there’s no going back and I just lie in bed getting more and more irritated.  That’s when I move to the couch and hope for the best.  I’ll play solitaire on my phone, but if even that fails then I’ll pull out the laptop and write.

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up? 

My brain’s still a bit addled and I’m not 100% yet, so this one will be a little vague.  I love that we got to hang out with sista-friend and Big D on Friday night – it had been forever.  And Bear played her first softball scrimmage on Saturday and rocked it out.  That was awesome and she had a blast.

This week I’d love to start by being grateful if I could kick this bug that’s busy kicking my ass.  It would be nice to be awake for more than three hours at a time.  Just sayin’.  Bear’s supposed to play her first official softball games but that’s unlikely considering there’s a flood watch through tomorrow and a run on ark building materials.  So I guess we’ll focus on being grateful for having the ability to put my health first and step back while I recover.

    • Sounds random but it’s worked for years. I’ve tried to share that tip with my kids but unfortunately they don’t have Willy Wonka memorized start to finish so they’ve got to find their own bad dream tricks.

  1. I hate hot tea but think the benefits of green tea are great so I brew a couple of tea bags in a large glass pitcher and then add cold water. I find I can drink it more easily than plain old water, especially if you add a splash of juice to it. My soda choice is Cherry Dr. Pepper, adult beverages are Coors lite, Woodford Reserve bourbon, and gin. I would love to have a bar set up like you see in movies and on soap operas so I could have a wide variety of adult beverages on hand in an awesome vintage bar cart or something like that. I rarely ever have more than one adult beverage but most of my friends don’t drink and so I really could not have it out on display! I need a “Murphy” bar that could fold up and out of sight!
    My gift would be to have total peace and trust in the Lord that everything is for a purpose and even though I might be suffering, it is for a greater purpose tho I may not see it or understand it.
    I have a sleep disorder so falling asleep is usually a many hour process. Most of the time, I toss and turn, think of a billion things, pray, tell myself that at least my body is laying down and if I really feel like I am not going to sleep, then I will get up and watch movies or go online. Thank goodness I am retired and do not have to be up at 7am.
    I am grateful that I was able to have my three grands come over on Friday and spend the night and then my daughter and her husband and the 1yr old came after dinner to get the kids and stayed and we had a fire outside in the yard. It takes me days to recover from having them overnight as I give them my full attention and I am not used to noise and constant chatter…..as their mother was an only child and was very quiet!!! But I love them to pieces and am always grateful for the chance to babysit (they are 7, 5, 3, and 1)

  2. That’s a good tip — I’ve heard great things about green tea but don’t care for the taste, but maybe I’ll try it cold with the juice. About a year ago we “cut out” soda (quotes because we stopped keeping 2 liter bottles in the fridge but we still keep cans in the garage for the occasional fix) so really, unless we’re eating out, it’s pretty much water or beer at home. 🙂

    I hope one day I have the joy of being a grandma…it looks like a pretty special thing. (Though no wonder it takes days to recover — 7, 5, 3, and 1 — whew!)
