What did you or did not like about the first place you lived without your parents?

College housing had its typical challenges with roommate issues and learning how to handle conflict as an extremely confrontation-averse semi-adult. I’d like to think I’d do better at that now. And I’m seriously impressed at how high school seniors approach finding a roommate these days – colleges offer extensive surveys about personality traits (I guess they figured out that blindly matching folks up to live together wasn’t the best approach) and there are even facebook groups to facilitate meet ups. One girl I know has been texting several other incoming freshmen and is planning coffee dates so they can see if they mesh. But I digress.

My first official apartment post-college was my one and only year of living alone. After years with my family then five more years with roommates, the freedom of my very own space was intoxicating. I loved keeping my own hours, not worrying about other people when it came to keeping things quiet or noisy, and having my own space for food and such.

What is your most favorite smell/scent?

This changes depending on my mood. I almost always love the smell of vanilla, though. I used to catch this in baking, but Bear uses a vanilla body mist that always smells lovely.

Would you prefer snowy winters, or not, and why?

As much as I complain about crazy snow drivers and such, I do prefer snowy winters. I’m sure a great deal of this has to do with the fact that I don’t shovel walkways, though, and I usually can choose to just bunker down at home instead of facing the roads. Basically, I’m not a huge fan of cold, so if it’s gonna be chilly then at least I’d like it to be pretty.

What did you appreciate or what made you smile this past week?  Feel free to use a quote, a photo, a story, or even a combination.

Bear had her end of season basketball party at the school last night. They had open gym before dinner, and I had such a warm feeling as I watched the girls hanging out. Some were hitting a volleyball around while others were playing basketball games or just taking shots. Music was blasting from the sound system and once in a while a girl would bust into dance moves. It was a joyful gathering, and I’m so grateful Bear had the chance to be part of that this year.
