“It’s beautiful! I love it.”
My mama uttered this time and again over the years. Every macaroni necklace, popsicle stick art, and homemade coupon book were met with her heartfelt appreciation. It was always “I love it because you made it yourself.” Boy, that sure sounded like a bunch of malarkey. Everybody knows it’s The Stuff that’s the bomb.
Imagine my surprise when I meant every word after our own kids came along.
We’re the grownups. We have the money and the purchasing power, so if there’s something I really want I can buy it myself. But you know what I can’t buy? The thought and time that goes into something my kids create for me. The feeling I have when I hold what T-man or Bear made with their own two hands. The snapshot of who they are – right now, in this particular phase of life – that’s interwoven with such a personal gift.
Son of a gun. Once again, mama was right.
So much truth in this. Those little hand-made treasures mean all the world to me. 🙂

Of course Mama’s always right! Her children are also the cleverest and most talented in the class even if they don’t win all the prizes.

When I was in grade school, my mom proudly wore one of my noodle necklaces to her bowling banquet, making a big deal over how nice it looked as she left the house. Years later, once I had kids of my own, I reminded her of that day and said I understood now that she probably took that necklace off as soon as she got in the car. She replied, “No, I wore it all night and told everyone my daughter made it for me.” Awwww.

My mom used two lamps that I made her in shop class, for years before she finally replaced them for (nice) lamps. It’s what mothers do. I think she saw something in them that I didn’t.

I can only imagine what your mom thought while looking at them. One of mine made me a crazy little pottery bowl I keep behind the kitchen sink to hold coins, rings, etc. She commented once that it was ugly & she didn’t know why I kept it — but I love it! She looked at me exactly the way I used to look at my mom… 💛
