“When we tug at a single thing in nature, we find it attached to the rest of the world.”
– John Muir
I keep a quotes note on my phone. Everybody does this, right? It’s a handy place to drop quotes I come across, sayings I find interesting or thought provoking. The criteria is a little amorphous – basically if it wiggles into my head with a huh, it’s fair game.
I’ve held onto his particular quote for a few months now. Every once in a while I’d think about deleting it figuring well, if it hasn’t fit by now it must have been a fluke. Sometimes I get those. But then this week, it clicked.
We don’t live in a vacuum. And it occurs to me – just a thought now – that maybe we’d be a whole lot better off if everybody remembered how interconnected we really are.

Great quote, and it reminds me of the Butterfly Effect.

Indeed we do not. Unfortunately, the president thinks we do.

I wish we could store HIM in a vacuum. No loud racket, no mocking people on an international stage…

I’m glad you kept and decided to use this quote. As our environmental protections are being systematically rolled back by the current administration, I wish more people would understand that we are not an island, self sufficient and unconnected.

Seems like a no brainer to me but I find a large number of people don’t see it. 🤷🏻♀️

I think with all the modern media and ways to connect, we don’t even need those seven degrees of separation – we are all within reach.

Wish I could convince my kids of the ramifications.

It used to be that you could wait until they were on their way to college to tell them that you won’t always be able to protect them.

That one sentence says a lot, doesn’t it? Across the globe and down through history, we are all connected. Which means we need each other. And also means none of us is truly alone.
