Name two books that have influenced you and share how.  (Credit for this question goes to Teresa of The Haunted Wordsmith.   She asked for TEN books, in her challenge, so the SYW folks got off a bit easy..)

White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism by Robin DiAngelo

This was my aha book. I knew things weren’t right. It was easy to see the evil in white supremacy, but I had a feeling there was something more I was missing. Something bigger. White Fragility made me realize what that something was and see how I contributed to it.

The Nancy Drew series.

Not to sound like a snob or anything but I mean the original books, not that crummy Nancy Drew Files spinoff. (The E-mail Mystery – pssh!) I practically lived in the library as a child but we actually owned copies of the Nancy Drew books. I think my love for those early mysteries sparked a love of learning that’s been lifelong.

In your opinion, where is the line between art and not art?

This one’s tricky. I guess from my particular point of view, art is something that moves me. If it makes me think, feel, cry, sing, yearn, hope – it’s art.

Trivia for Halloween:   What item is banned only during Halloween from 12am October 31st to 12pm November 1st in Hollywood California?   (I know the answer, but I do not have any idea WHY)..c’mon…hazard a guess!

Ummm…5 hour energy drinks?

What is something that really annoys you but doesn’t bother most people?

This might be too literal but those air fresheners they put in public restrooms. The ones bolted to the wall that pump out industrial strength chemicals to combat any indelicate odors in the room. It’s one of those good thought, horrible execution things.

What or who in your life brings you the most joy?

I seriously 100% for real cannot choose one person/thing for this question because different things bring different joy on different days. Here, in no particular order, are a few of mine:

  • My critters. The birds, the dogs, and the kitty have a way of making me smile even on the worst of days.
  • BrightSide. Sharing laughs with him makes them funnier, sharing burdens with him makes them lighter.
  • T-man and Bear. I talk a good game about how they bring the nutty – and they do – but these kiddos bring some big joy to our lives.
  • Siblings. I guess I’ve got a family theme going, but there’s something special about siblings. The fact that there are two people on this planet who’ve known me my whole life and would walk through fire for me is pretty powerful.
