“Well, here we are, folks. It’s Halloween season. My kids are at peak age—old enough to have very strong opinions about what they want to dress up as and feel they need to compete with their peers, but not old enough to have their own J.O.B.s so they can pay for their own shit. For example, my daughter came across a cute Hermione costume online that she loved. It was 80 bucks. EIGHTY DOLLARS, ARE YOU KIDDING ME, CHILD.”

My son wanted Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean. Over $100. Not happening. Here’s some eyeliner, you can be Captain Jack.

My kids never had store-bought costumes. There simply wasn’t enough money. One year I brought home a heavy clear plastic file folder, opened it out, cut it into wings, added stars and glitter, put on straps – and my daughter became a butterfly. Another year, we took a black sweatshirt and black tights, added black gloves with fake nails for claws, and sewed on a tail, then sewed some ears to a black knitted cap – with a few swipes of mascara on the face as whiskers, it was the best black cat costume ever. A little ingenuity can go a look way when there’s not enough cash.

So true!! I wonder how kids fell away from the magic of creating their own Halloween magic.

I don’t think it was the kids. I think many of today’s parents simply can’t be bothered. It’s so much easier to simply buy something.

That’s a great point. So much has changed since I was little!

For real tho! I try to DIY Halloween costumes, so much cheaper.

Right?! There was that stage when the kids cared that a costume be store bought. Blowing cash like that for candy hunting is stomach turning. 🙄

I’m just enjoying my kids being little and not caring what they dress up as lol but I think if I get then involved with making their costumes they’ll not want a store bought one.
