“If you aren’t hip to this weird racist beauty trend that has been happening lately, there seems to be many beauty influencers on Youtube and Instagram that are using darker color makeup, traditionally black hairstyles and creating other “black” feature, in order to make themselves seem or appear “black”.
Even Ariana Grande has been accused of participating in this trend. Many people have notice her skin is drastically darker than its original color. It doesn’t help that she seems to be quickly speeding down that lane of “white girl using hip hop for profit” with her new song “7 Rings” in which she stole imagery from rapper 2 Chainz and a sample from Soulja Boi, whom only got credited on the song, when She was publicly called out on twitter.
I have had many messages from people asking me my thoughts on this trend and I really only have three things to say about it.”
Have You Heard Of Blackfishing? Let’s Talk About It: Only Black Girl
I didn’t know about this so appreciate learning. I’m glad the linked article clarifies about tanning which was a the first thing I thought of. I remember when I was in high school, showing pale white legs was a big no no, resulting in – well that stupid high school shaming. Being a red head, I did plenty of damage to my skin trying to get a tan. I know it’s not the same thing, but it’s interesting how hard it is for some people to be comfortable in our own skin. I’m just not getting to that.

I was shocked at how far people take it. I’m used to the longing for a tan, that’s been going on forever, but excessive tanning booths? Darkening makeup? Hairstyles that are WAY out of your lane? I learned a lot, too.

I heard about it on Twitter. I never thought Ariana was black, but I did assume she was Latina because of her “tan,” which I now understand is fake. Not that it matters either way. From my pov, I don’t care what someone is, but I can understand if it bugs actual black peeps.

Gotta say I’m feeling pretty dumb about Ariana. I mean, my kid watched her on that Nickolodeon (Disney?) show when she was younger which means I’m sure I’ve seen her a ton. How I missed that huge transition from pale redhead to super SUPER bronzed thing I’ll never know…non-black peep here but I’m still pretty offended by the Instagram pics I saw. It’s painful how far over the line those girls stepped.
