Damn, y’all. Karma.
Huh. That seems…coincidental. Or maybe prophetic. I dunno.

I’ve been listening to people in the media praising young heroes. Eighteen-year-old Kendrick Castillo lunged at a classmate who pulled a gun on Tuesday. Last week twenty-one-year-old Riley Howell charged a gunman who entered a lecture room at UNC Charlotte. The fact that these young people are dying is tragic. The fact that legislators won’t pass responsible gun laws to protect students is obscene.
There’s a lot of discussion about the new heartbeat bill Georgia’s governor signed into law this week. Without engaging on the debate about abortion rights – look at Carliss Chatman’s tweet. You can be anti-abortion but you cannot call yourself pro-life if you don’t give that six-week fetus every protection.
I get it. It’s the end of the year. You’re stressed. Your budget’s blown. BUT YOU STILL HAVE TO PUT KIDS BEFORE DOLLARS. Always.

Sandra Bland was found hanged in a jail cell three days after this was taken. One commenter noted, “It’s like she’s talking to us from the grave.” Pay attention.
Apple has an app called Shortcuts with one option called “Police.” This is how it works. You say, “Hey Siri, I’m getting pulled over.” The program pauses any music you’re playing, turns down the brightness, and turns on “do not disturb” mode. It sends a text to a pre-determined contact telling them you’ve been pulled over and begins recording using the iPhone’s front facing camera. Once you’ve stopped recording it can text or e-mail the video to a pre-determined contact or save it to Dropbox.
The ACLU website has state-specific apps for both IOS and Android devices. The app will automatically send an audio/video recording to your state’s ACLU and offers you a chance to complete an incident report. This app also has a “Witness” feature that allows you to know if people around you are getting stopped by the police (or to ask others to witness your own stop). Not all states are listed yet but more apps are in development.
I heard about the kid and the school shooting at work. I had to go away and cry. Their parents must be devastated and proud and mad as hell, cause I am.

Same. I’m stricken each time the news alert pops up. There’s no such thing as somebody else’s kid — we ALL should be raising hell about these murders.

I am TOTALLY here for the Carliss Chatman tweet. I hadn’t heard this debate yet, thanks for posting it. The points this person made NEED to be talked about. Need to be addressed. Need to be heard.

She nailed it, right? I’ve been so bothered by that Georgia law but she put it into words perfectly.

It’s heartbreaking. It’s a parents worst nightmare, and it continues to happen. Sorry more guns is never going to address the problem. In the UK thankfully we cracked down on gun use after we had a horrid school massacre. In the UK it’s now knife crime causing heartbreak.

And every heartbreak is one too many. Sadly, that’s the argument people here put forward when we talk about restricting guns — it won’t matter, people will just find another way to kill — but the difference is the number of lives affected.

It’s hard to concentrate on proms which my grandkids are having this weekend while remembering this 18 year old hero in Colorado.

It really is. So many kids are losing their childhood in an instant. It’s beyond sad.

I can’t believe anyone still supports Trump and yet they do. It boggles my mind. I’m so disappointed in people.

It’s hard to move past it now. In the very beginning I tried the “they’ll see eventually” approach, but now? It’s an active choice now.

This week I’ve been avoiding Twitter while trying to intentionally be more positive on my blog and IG account. That being said the George Takei tweet and the Charliss Chatman tweet are perfect. Clearly the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what’s wrong in our country right now. Thanks for sharing all of this here.

It’s like Lent when I’d give up chocolate then end up at someone’s house where they plopped a brownie down in front of me. Best intentions…
And yeah, those two tweets nailed it.

Good analogy. Not really complaining that news finds its way to me, but sometimes all I want is happy.

True that. Maybe I need to take a social media sabbatical myself…

We should be reading about proms and amazing baseball catches, not heroes taking a bullet for a friend. Interesting information about those apps, I might look into that. Thanks.

No problem, Dan. I set mine up as soon as I heard about it & put it on my son’s phone soon after. I never imagined I’d need to tell my kid “if you’re driving or in a car that gets pulled over start recording” but here we are.
I’d much rather be hearing about proms and baseball. 😦
