There’s this thing that happens when somebody comes at me with, “Just come out and be social for a while. You can leave whenever you feel like it.” The person who’s speaking suddenly morphs into the grim reaper, beckoning me with their bony death finger to come on, hang out, be social, you know you want to except all I hear is a ghostly rasp: “Come oooouuuuuttt, loserrrrr. You neverrr hang oooouuuuuttt like the other cool kids. Yeah, you’ll wear the wrong thing and probably say the wrong thing but you’re an adult, you’re supposed to goooooooo.”
Yikes. It’s not just me, right?
Nothing – and I mean nothing – strikes fear in my heart like a vague invitation to a group thing. And no, the “you can leave whenever you want part” doesn’t help because “whenever I want” is actually before I go through the struggle of figuring out what to put on my body and what to do with my hair, fighting to hide that crazy zit that will.not.go.away, and psyching myself up to make small talk with strangers when that’s akin to root canal in my world.
Now a small group of friends getting together? Going out for coffee or dinner or hanging at each other’s houses? That’s the sort of social I can get behind. All hail the introverts and their close knit circle of friends.
Linda hosts Stream of Consciousness Saturday. This week’s prompt is “social.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!
I’m right there with you. I understand completely. Especially clothes and hair. I make MANY weekend decisions based on wardrobe and hair.

I swear I just had this conversation with one of my friends today. A big, fat NOPE on going out with a bunch of people I don’t know. My college days are way in the past but i think I’d need a few drinks first just to get my butt out of the door!

100% truth right there. 😆

Funny thing is, we have a big group here of “I’m right there with you”s. 😀 A group of introverts is called. . . what? An uncomfortableness of introverts, perhaps?

Or maybe an “at unease”? 😆

Oh dear, this could get a life of its own! How about a reluctance of introverts? 🙂

haha The Grim Reaper for real! I have the same feeling of needing to leave before I even go. If I can get out of it, I will. 🙂

But I’m all about the texting! Can we just text hangout? My kid does it all the time. 😆

I’m with you all the way on that one. Being in a large group of strangers is a lot like phone calls for me – I have absolutely nothing to say now.

UGH – phone calls are THE WORST. Seriously, even with my very best friends, I just don’t like to do it. I need the face to face part to keep my mind from wandering!

We’re forming a club. With t-shirts.

I’m in. And as a fellow introvert once said to me about a similar club: We wouldn’t actually ever have to meet.

I prefer small gatherings too. Definitely not just you.

We’re our own solid support group — the ones who don’t want to meet each other in person but we totally get that. 😆

I am also not a fan of big social event, Laura. I don’t find them relaxing at all.

Nope. I’ve never understood people who get all pumped about a huge party. They seriously stress me out!!
