At the moment I’ve got two snoozing dogs and a kid watching The 100 who’s over the moon because they loaded two new seasons on Netflix. The cat is standing watch by the window, just hoping a hummingbird comes to the feeder so she can flex her huntress muscles and leap. (I do mean that literally, there’s a reason we’ve raised the blinds on that particular window.)
I’m smelling the six pound turkey I crammed in the crockpot this morning, and I’m wondering if we’ll end up needing takeout since I’m suddenly doubting my math on how much turkey I should have cooked for four people. Maybe I can make some bread to go with it, though my options are pretty limited there. Some garlic bread in the freezer, I think, and cornbread mix in the pantry. Neither of those really go with turkey but desperate times call for desperate measures or so they say.
I also smell the green beans I put on to cook down an hour ago. “Cook down” is a term I spent most of my life unfamiliar with, but apparently it’s required down here in the south. They can probably run you out of state for trying to serve crisp veggies in their close-to-original form. BrightSide should love these, though, they’re smelling nice and – WAIT A SECOND, THOSE SMELL WAY TOO STRONG! [pause here]
I call it a win when I haven’t cooked away all the liquid in the pot plus a little extra added water never hurt anybody. So hey, good news, I’ve still got that side on my…side. I was trapped by my own sentence structure there.
So hopefully enough turkey, green beans, mashed potatoes, gravy. I’ve got some leftover broccoli in the fridge plus another head I didn’t cook on Wednesday so I can steam that tonight. Oh! And crescent rolls! Surely that will be enough food, even with two starving teens in the house.
Nobody told me one of the worst parts about being an adult is figuring out what to have for dinner. Over and over and over again.
Linda hosts Stream of Consciousness Saturday. This week’s prompt is “preposition” Start your post with any preposition. Bonus points if you end with one too. Enjoy! [Clearly I do not earn the bonus points. It seems I’m entirely incapable of ending a sentence with a preposition. My high school English teacher would be proud.]
I would get tired of figuring out what’s for dinner when my kids were growing up. Now I am doing it again to help my husband stay healthy.

That’s good motivation. It’s harder, too, to cook for people who don’t always appreciate it. I know I should be doing this for me but that makes a difference in my motivation.

Maybe they will appreciate when they get older and have to cook for themselves or their own children.

That sounds like one helluva of a delicious southern meal – way to go! So…I’m late to commenting, do tell, how did it taste and do you have leftovers?!

It tasted FABULOUS. We’ve got enough turkey left that I can make sides for another meal tomorrow. Afraid I already gobbled up the leftover mashed potatoes & gravy! 😆

YAY! Leftovers are the best. I’m a mashed potatoes and gravy lover too…such grand comfort food!

Right? Can’t think of anything that a good bowl won’t make better. 😉

Meal planning is strange when the kids grow up and move out. I still make way too much of everything and we most things for days. Hahahaha

On the plus side, that eliminates meal planning for those leftover days. 😆

Oh I hear you so much. The textbooks make it sound so easy. Maybe the secret is in how many glasses of wine you can sneak in during the process

Wine! Yes! Knew I was forgetting something in the cooking process yesterday. 😆

I grew up with over cooked veggies. I guess it is a southern thing, but we no longer eat like that. Your meal sounds delicious. I should use my crockpot more…

It’s a big help, especially when I’m fixing sides. It’s great to have an open oven to work with!

I don’t mind the preparation of a meal, if I can figure out what I want to prepare. I used Blue Apron for awhile and that lack of needing to plan was great.

I agree, the planning is the hardest part. I actually kind of enjoy cooking now. Maybe someone just needs to hand me a schedule then…

6 pounds for 4 people sounds about right. Was it?

It was! I read a guide online once & remembered it wrong (as 3 lbs per person). We even have leftovers so yay!

Well now you know! What to make for dinner is often the most irritating question we have to face daily! 😂😂😂

I’ve tried so many systems for this over the years & nothing makes it less annoying. NOTHING!!

I know. It’s something that we have to live with.

I live in the north and I still want my green and yellow beans cooked until soft. My mom and dad always made veggies soft and I really prefer them that way. The only crisp veggies should make up a nice green salad.
Good luck with the turkey and no worries about serving cornbread. I have a wonderful corn fritter casserole (fancy corn bread) that I used to serve often at holidays. It goes with anything!

Did anyone tell you about making lunches for school before you had kids? Those days are over for me and I wasn’t sad to see them go.

NO. The hidden work surprises have been the worst!! The kids started packing their own lunches in late elementary school & I did a dance of joy to lose that chore on my list.

Mmmmm, it all sounds good (and garlic bread goes with everything). I think when I was a teen, I could eat a 6 pound turkey on the way to dinner.

Yeah, I’m seeing signs of that stage around here. We’ll see which one of them gets the farthest into the school year before outgrowing their shoes. 😆
