I’ve gone back and forth over the years on the value of weighing myself. Sometimes it seemed important to track, other times it seemed like it just stressed me out. Articles haven’t helped – some laud the importance of marking the ups and downs, others emphasize that how you feel and how clothes fit tell you everything you need to know about your weight. I’ve landed on a system that might seem a bit OCD but is actually what’s best for me. Unfortunately, it does involve stepping on a scale every single morning.
Oh joy.
But you see, weighing myself each day gives me a lot more information than just pounds on this frame. It helps me catch patterns before I’m too far down the rabbit hole. Eating clean and exercising? Yep, there goes half a pound. Exercising but bringing home Chipotle for dinner? I can get away with it once, maybe, but another cheat and doink! I watch that scale tick up a pound or two. Sometimes the guacamole’s worth it, sometimes it’s not, but at least I”m making an informed decision either way.
It was when I started doing that cleanse that I began weighing every day. Tracking my pounds plus logging my meals helped make it easy to see what foods triggered me. I laid off the habit for a long while and boy, it sure is easy for ten pounds to sneak up on a girl when she isn’t paying attention. So here we are, back on the bandwagon. We’ll see how it goes.
Linda hosts Stream of Consciousness Saturday. This week’s prompt is “weigh/way/whey.” Use one, use ’em all, bonus points if you do that last thing. Enjoy!
Weighing myself daily has worked for me in the past. Those numbers are harder to deny than the jeans not fitting because they might have shrunk. The only exception was when we were displaced to another town due to renovations. I was shocked to learn I’d lost 10 pounds in the seven months we were there, and I wasn’t even trying. The only things I can figure are that we ate at home more instead of eating out and did not go to our normally frequent church potlucks. Now that we’re back home, the pounds are creeping back up. Maybe it’s time to buy some scales.

Oh my, yes, those church potlucks can be the end of every good intention. So much cheesy, buttery, bread-y goodness. 😉 I’m getting back in the swing of things with meal planning so we cook more at home. That definitely makes a difference for me!

Yeah. I sometimes pray before a pot luck to eat healthy. I think I need to pray throughout for healthy balance.

What makes me nuts is my husband always loses weight so easily. Lately, I have been watching our diets to help him. Of course, he lost weight but I may have lost a little too. I don’t buy cookies, ice cream, or any sweets. We have been eating fresh fruit for desert.

Ooh, cutting out the processed sugar is a huge step. And isn’t that the truth — my hubby drops weight much faster than I do when we’re working the same plan. Even more frustrating is that I can be eating right and working out almost every day and we’re BOTH still holding steady. Sheesh!

What is chipotle? I weigh myself once in two weeks 🙂

Chipotle is a restaurant in the U.S. that serves Mexican food. Technically it’s fast food but I’d say it’s better for me than most others. I can order a bowl there with rice, beans, tofu, & fixings – most quick restaurants don’t have anything I can eat. And I do love Mexican food!

I have to admire your spunk. Most just say the hell with it. I used to weigh myself every day but then had some health issues that included the dreaded hormone therapy. Finally said as long as the clothes fit I’m going to quit stressing. I have a pair of board shorts that are the standard measure. A little tight and I watch it. Good post, Laura

Thanks, John. In all honesty it’s more about getting healthy (though I won’t complain if I drop a little weight). There’s something about being a stone’s throw from 50 that made me get serious about being able to walk a mile comfortably. 🙂

I’m a stone’s throw from 80 and I know what you mean 😁

Right?! It’s the pressure of a deadline. Whatever it takes, I guess.

LOL – I’m right there with you – daily weigh-ins are a must in my book too. Congrats on finding what works for you. Chipotle does the same thing to me…huh? It may be the chips and guac, too. LOL!

It’s been a spectrum of answers but people know what works for them. And that Chipotle…mmmm… I think things just got a little out of hand when I downloaded the app. 😆😆

It is fun to see what works for people and what doesn’t! There’s a reason I haven’t downloaded it! LOL 🙂

I used to weigh myself daily, but decided that for me it was too anxiety producing to be a good thing. Numbers make me fret. Now I only step on the scale at the doc’s office and seem to maintain a healthy weight. Whatever works, eh?

Absolutely. There’ve been times in my life when stepping on the scale frequently was absolutely out of the question. It was just depressing and tended to make me repeat self defeating behaviors, so I had a general idea of how I was doing based on how my jeans fit. Whatever works sums it up.

What a great idea. Been trying to work out which foods are bad for me (apart from the obvious ones) but never thought if doing it this way. It’s way cheaper than paying for sessions with dieticians.

Those sessions aren’t cheap so this is worth a shot. If you’ve got the patience for it this really helped me: strip out basically everything for a week. No caffeine, sugar, artificial sweeteners, dairy, alcohol, anything you get in a box from the grocery store. You’ll pretty much eat fresh veggies and maybe chicken cooked with minimal spices for a week and let the other stuff clear your system. Then you pick something – say, cheese or a meat – and add it back in to see how your body reacts. A slow process but easy to see what your body doesn’t do well with.

Struggled with IBS since I was 18. It really is worth a go. Am going to try it. What did you drink than apart from water.

Good luck! I found a non-caffeinated herbal tea to drink instead of my coffee but other than that water was pretty much it. Here’s a good link to an elimination diet guide: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/elimination-diet#section4

Maybe I should try that “weigh yourself every day” thing…

Well, it’s an emotional investment, but if you’re serious here’s the advice I got – step on first thing in the morning right before you get in the shower. You’ve had all night to process and react to food from the day before and you haven’t taken in anything new yet that day. Apparently weight fluctuates the tiniest bit even pre- and post-shower (maybe we absorb water into our skin?). Anyway, that’s supposed to give you the most accurate idea of what’s going on. Unfortunately it does mean the first thing I see each day is that stupid number! 😆😆

I weigh myself every other day because it doesn’t take much to go one way or another. They say to only weigh once a week, but I can’t buy into it. It’s a way to stay on track, as you say, and know when to say “no” to the bad food and the non-exercise.

Agreed. That said, it works for me because I’m the age I am with a relatively stable body image. I don’t tell my teens to do this and it would be terrible for the friends I’ve had who struggled with eating disorders.

“…half a pound.” That seems way too accurate. I like an analog scale that you have to estimate within a 3-pound range.

Yeah, the digital thing can mess with my head. When I just have to shake sense back into myself when I’m standing there thinking hard about those .2 pounds. 🙄

I really agree with you. I’m in same place. I weigh every morning because my weight is so sensitive. I record it in the app “my fitness pal” and the graph going down is such an incentive. Good luck 👍🏻💐

I see how it’s a bad idea for some people but it works for me. Simplest way to catch an ingredient or recipe that I struggle with.
