I don’t know, I can’t put my finger on it, but this whole thing just isn’t that shocking. Weird, right? I mean, it’s an adjustment and every week brings a new version of normal but it’s not…unfathomable? Maybe unfathomable is the word.
Maybe I was just following the right accounts on twitter and paid attention in February. It’s not like the warning signs weren’t out there. Especially if you paid attention to what was happening outside our own country. I saw things get bad, I heard people sounding the alarm, so now here we are. Every once in a while, though, I think of something else changed by the fallout.
I know the White House is selling this thing one month at a time now. Sure, it’s a step up from it’s no big deal or we’re handling it or okay, maybe distancing for two weeks would slow down this mess but it’s not where it needs to be. I’d like to think the scientists are telling Trump what Europe’s already addressing. Maybe he’s gambling that his supporters won’t freak out if he goes month to month, dragging this thing out as long as it needs to go. I think it’s the wrong play. There are already European events in September and October that have been cancelled or postponed because they’re talking – really talking – about reality.
Must be nice.
So it occurred to me, since I’m pretty sure this summer’s gonna be all jacked up, that there’s going to be an entire season of swim lessons missed. Like, kids destined to be thrown in the deep end to sink or swim will miss out. No panic over sinking, no hyperventilating at the thought of jumping off the diving board, no icy cold water at nine in the morning.
And sure, on the surface that sounds okay enough, but we don’t want a whole section of kids who don’t know how to swim. Danger, Will Robinson, danger!
Linda hosts Stream of Consciousness Saturday. This week’s prompt is “deep.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!
I do real from shock. Not at what’s happened, but by the sheer volume of loss. And I rage at the inadequacy of the orange man in charge

Oh yes, Joey, there’s a great deal of raging going on here as well. My people seem lulled into a false sense of security since we don’t know anyone personally affected by covid19 yet. I say yet because I know it’s a matter of time. I really wish some of the other parents locally would get on board here.

It’s confusing. An art festival I’m scheduled for was moved from the end of May to the end of June. Seems optimistic. I guess they can always reschedule it again. Hopefully kids (and we adults) are learning other things, though swimming is pretty important. My granddaughter was just learning to float on her back…..

And I’m sure swimming time will come ’round again, it’s just so weird to be in summer activity sign-up time and have a big fat nothing going on. Should make for an interesting time though!

Yes. We will just have to go with the different flow.

Mark Twain would have an answer for unfathomable. Good chance it would involve sandbars, delays, and maybe even something about the qualities of a captain.

And now I’m off to do my Mark Twain reading. 🙂

The earliest the scientists are talking about the UK getting to the top of the curve is May. My work is based on community events and cycle races. The big races are not thinking about being rescheduled until after September. We are mothballed until at least mid June but realistically probably until at least August. School is planning on being shut until September. Clearly this is not a quick fix. Got to find a way within the restrictions to allow kids to have a childhood.

You’re absolutely right. It’s going to take creativity to keep things light for them.

I think things will take a while to get to normal.

I think some things will permanently change. I don’t know what those are yet, but I can’t see us going back to the way things were.

I think so too.

There is a new normal now.

Definitely, and it helps when people look at it as “normal”.

Getting real is tough for some. Especially if they need to be liked.

Yeah, that being everybody’s favorite thing is definitely not on my priority list. I’m playing the long game here.

What we need is sane, reasonable, intelligent, thoughtful leadership. What we don’t have is sane, reasonable, intelligent, thoughtful leadership. I’m sure scientists have been and are “telling” Trump – I’m equally sure trump is not listening, because I think listening is something he doesn’t do. Sigh.

Listening. Who knew it could be such a challenge.

I’m sure it’s likely that those lessons will be cancelled, but it’s hard to imagine anything surviving in that water.

True. Those chlorine levels are yikes.
