I don’t know, I can’t put my finger on it, but this whole thing just isn’t that shocking. Weird, right? I mean, it’s an adjustment and every week brings a new version of normal but it’s not…unfathomable? Maybe unfathomable is the word.

Maybe I was just following the right accounts on twitter and paid attention in February. It’s not like the warning signs weren’t out there. Especially if you paid attention to what was happening outside our own country. I saw things get bad, I heard people sounding the alarm, so now here we are. Every once in a while, though, I think of something else changed by the fallout.

I know the White House is selling this thing one month at a time now. Sure, it’s a step up from it’s no big deal or we’re handling it or okay, maybe distancing for two weeks would slow down this mess but it’s not where it needs to be. I’d like to think the scientists are telling Trump what Europe’s already addressing. Maybe he’s gambling that his supporters won’t freak out if he goes month to month, dragging this thing out as long as it needs to go. I think it’s the wrong play. There are already European events in September and October that have been cancelled or postponed because they’re talking – really talking – about reality.

Must be nice.

So it occurred to me, since I’m pretty sure this summer’s gonna be all jacked up, that there’s going to be an entire season of swim lessons missed. Like, kids destined to be thrown in the deep end to sink or swim will miss out. No panic over sinking, no hyperventilating at the thought of jumping off the diving board, no icy cold water at nine in the morning.

And sure, on the surface that sounds okay enough, but we don’t want a whole section of kids who don’t know how to swim. Danger, Will Robinson, danger!

Linda hosts Stream of Consciousness Saturday. This week’s prompt is “deep.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!
