Opt sounds like a choice, right? Like I’ll opt to take a later train into the office or I’ll opt for drinks over dessert. It feels like a proactive choice to me, which is probably why websites piss me off so much.

Why is the default that I have to opt out of your promotional email offers? Doesn’t this sound like something I should actively choose? As in sure, enormous company, I’d LOVE to get six emails a week announcing your latest and greatest thing that I absolutely positively must have in my life. And why do I have to search your website to find a way to opt out of letting you share my data with anyone on God’s green earth? I’d much rather you have a box to check saying sure, I don’t mind, go on and share what you’d like with the rest of the world, my inbox has been feeling a little light lately.

I’d just rather it be my choice, you know? That doesn’t seem too much to ask.

Linda hosts Stream of Consciousness Saturday. This week’s prompt is “opt.” Use it as a word or find a word with “opt” in it and base your post on that. Have fun!
