Opt sounds like a choice, right? Like I’ll opt to take a later train into the office or I’ll opt for drinks over dessert. It feels like a proactive choice to me, which is probably why websites piss me off so much.
Why is the default that I have to opt out of your promotional email offers? Doesn’t this sound like something I should actively choose? As in sure, enormous company, I’d LOVE to get six emails a week announcing your latest and greatest thing that I absolutely positively must have in my life. And why do I have to search your website to find a way to opt out of letting you share my data with anyone on God’s green earth? I’d much rather you have a box to check saying sure, I don’t mind, go on and share what you’d like with the rest of the world, my inbox has been feeling a little light lately.
I’d just rather it be my choice, you know? That doesn’t seem too much to ask.
Linda hosts Stream of Consciousness Saturday. This week’s prompt is “opt.” Use it as a word or find a word with “opt” in it and base your post on that. Have fun!
Excellent points – my head spins every time I open my email. Ugh. I suppose it’s hard for businesses to get our attention because there’s shopping more online than in person? This year, I tell ya – it’s been a headscratcher!

Exactly! My inbox is overwhelming. I rarely give my email address to anyone anymore, even if I like the product.

I do a lot of online shopping these days and so many of them send shipping notifications that way. It’s a frustrating endless cycle of pings.

I spent a better part of my time off unsubscribing. I’d let it get away from me again. I’d much prefer to opt in on my own.

So much simpler that way. I don’t understand why they don’t see how spamming inboxes creates ill will and that’s not good in the long run.

You are so spot on! I receive emails everyday…probably at least a hundred, where I have opted out of receiving emails but they still send them. Its true, why do I have to opt out, why can’t you just leave me be until I opt in?

When we find a way to require that change I’ll be overjoyed.

Most of my mail seems to be junk. Delete, delete, delete. I recently opted out (or tried to) of one site that I had not opted into – and continued to get mail from them. Only where it had shown a choice to unsubscribe in the header before, it no longer did. It was as if I confirmed my email for them. Annoying. Kind of like the snail mail mailbox, which has no “opt out” choices.

Argh! SO IRRITATING!! I’ll have to pick an afternoon soon when I’m motivated to do a mass unsubscribe effort again. 😣

If I don’t look at my email at least twice a day, I just loose control of it. Get snowed under. It’s crazy as most of it is crap.

I feel this. I mean with all our technological advances there’s got to be a way to make this better!!

I agree with you, Laura. My opt out finger gets really tired.

You’ve gotta know your system is a scam when you force it on everybody unless they jump through those hoops.

I recently started getting mail, and donation requests from a public TV station that is nowhere near our area. I can only guess that the one we are members of have sold us out. Now searching for a way to opt-out. IT is backwards. Thanks for venting, and allowing me to tag along, Laura.

Right? Ugh! My favorite is when you get the “You’ve unsubscribed. It may take up to 48 hours for changes to take effect.” message.

Yeah, when you subscribe, we start sending you spam in 8 minutes flat.

Everytime I get those opt out type of mails I also feel like opting in for mailbombing their return addresses. You’re TOO right!

Mailbombing sounds like a service we should be able to subscribe to. I would!
