Anyone else finding it nearly impossible to write a stream of consciousness post today? Just as I try to start something about sky’s the limit my brain flits to twitter or news clips or CNN commentary or the latest arrest. It doesn’t help that I just saw a truly disturbing video of a Capitol police officer being crushed in a doorway while holding back a mob trying to enter. It was…disturbing doesn’t quite cover it, that was actually painful to watch. Also troubling to hear a horde of people yelling “HANG MIKE PENCE” as they tried to force their way into the building.
Oh, but wait. Patriots. And the people’s house. And ‘Merica.
For freak’s sake.
Ah, the hell with it.
The ability of Republicans to try rewriting history knows no bounds and seemingly has no end. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – gaslighting falls on my list of deadly sins because WTF, we’ve WATCHED you bow and scrape to this man for years. You did Trump’s bidding and/or laid low and stayed out of the way for five years and now you want to distance yourself? No. Nope. NO.
Ted Cruz is banging the drum. He’s been Trump’s lap dog for years. On Tuesday he retweeted this:
Because Stop the Steal and Patriots Rise Up. He whipped those people rolling into town into a frenzy, watched them head off to Trump’s rally then waited for them to come show their support at the Capitol. Cruz helped to create those monsters then when they turned on him he tweeted this:
Since Wednesday night he’s tried turning on the meal ticket he’s cashed for years, claiming Trump had gone too far and he’d called him on it for years. Really? I’m constantly astounded at the balls on politicians. Either they are naive enough to think people haven’t saved receipts to prove every time they capitulated to that egomaniacal train wreck of a president or they’re foolhardy enough to think they can smooth talk their way out of anything.
WE SEE YOU, TED. We also see Giuliani, Hawley, McConnell, Lindsey Graham, and every freaking Republican who signed onto this ridiculous election fraud nonsense. Your lies and rewriting of history might have no end, but you know what else is long? Our memories. We won’t forget what led us to this week in America. We won’t forgive either.
Linda hosts Stream of Consciousness Saturday. This week’s prompt is “sky’s the limit.” Write about something that has or seems to have no end. Enjoy!
An on-site CBC reporter stated that the Capitol Hill rioters really believe that Trump had won the election, but I doubt that’s the case with the majority of his ardent supporters.
The rioters (and Trump) may have been enraged enough at his defeat by the supposedly ‘socialist’ Biden, they were now going to raise hell.

Just his election loss itself was/is touted as sufficient proof that Trump was cheated from a victory due to atypically massive electoral-ballot fraud—a claim they cannot factually support.
Meanwhile, they’d vehemently deny that any form of electoral fraud may have unjustly put Trump into the White House four years ago!
(BTW, were there not scrutineers from both political camps monitoring the election, including ballot counts, last November?)
Long before election day, Trump was saying he may not respect a Biden win, as though preparing his voter base for his inevitable refusal to leave office, at least not with dignity.
I find it plausible they maintained ‘Trump was cheated’ as an excuse for their attempt to overturn Joe Biden’s (apparently quite) legitimate electoral win—or at least make it as unpleasant as possible, as seen on January 6.
Might it be that those Trump supporters consciously or subconsciously believe that he MUST remain in office for some perceived greater good—notably to save America, make it great again and/or do ‘God’s will’—regardless of his democratically-decided election loss, and all of those in the (non-surprising) majority who voted against Trump MUST be overridden?
It may be a case of that perhaps most dangerous of ideologies: the end justifies the means.
I’m not equating Trump or his base support to any of history’s genocidal maniacs, but the most frightful example of that philosophical justification is the pogrom, the implementers of which know they’re committing mass murder yet still genuinely perceive it all as part of an ultimately greater good.

I agree — the 2020 election was the most closely watched/monitored one in my lifetime. The continued insistence that there was massive voter fraud despite an stunning lack of evidence is that in the same breath these people have no problem believing so many Republican candidates won their races down ticket. So…JUST the presidency was stolen? None of the congressional or local races were cheated? It defies all logic.

You got it! I see no courage in the Republican Party – I see a great deal of protecting your position. Not admirable. Do these people start out that way, or does it come with time and power?

That’s a chicken-or-the-egg mystery, isn’t it. I’m finding it harder and harder to see any redemptive characters among Republicans.

Laura, it still frustrates that we let it get to this. Quite simply, when you don’t push back on a tyrant, do not be surprised when he does tyrannical things. The people in positions of leadership looked the other way, rationalized, defended and some even supported the outgoing president’s four years of corrupt and deceitful behavior. They allowed Trump toadies to attack honorable diplomats and inspectors general as they raised concerns at great risk. It is easy to be courageous now that Trump ripped the band aid off and showed who he is, but it had always been present. The courage is defending these folks who knew they would be fired, but raised these issues anyway. Not supporting these people at that time is truly a damn shame.

It absolutely is. I’m not impressed by these last minute resignations – that’s not courage or integrity, that’s reading the political landscape. When I think about all the people who made it possible for him to erode our system like this I want to scream.

Laura, I wrote a similar message today about the mess that Trump has created. I will never understand the support from Republicans and American citizens that has continued over the past four years, but the entire “election fraud” campaign has been unbelievably vile and seditious. I hope the Capitol intruders that are arrested are punished to the full extent of the law and that we see some peace in the weeks to come.

I won’t lie, I’m scared about what the next 2 weeks will bring. I don’t think this is anywhere close to over. It also occurred to me this morning that the man who invited this riot is still in a position to pardon the people being arrested now and that makes my blood boil.

I don’t believe Trump can pardon these people until they’ve actually been convicted of a crime, and that will not happen for many weeks. You are right, this will not be over even after Biden and Harris are sworn into office. The hateful faction that exists will not go away without a fight, but I’m hopeful that a new administration will do whatever they can to remove their threat.
