“Want to go for a Sunday drive?”
Apparently this is an actual thing. I don’t recall anything like that happening growing up — our Sunday drive was home from church, stopping at the Dunkin’ Donuts for a box of sugary goodness before heading home to read the comics.
Driving is a mixed bag for me. I’m good with highways, interstates, main roads, side roads, all the usual types of roads. You know what I’m not good with? Driving curvy, winding, makes-me-feel-seconds-away-from-puking roads. Front seat, back seat, it makes no difference to me. Those curves wreak havoc on my constitution and that is No Fun.
But even with the straight roads I just don’t find driving relaxing. It can be pretty, sure, but there’s too much I’m focused on to really zone out. I much prefer sitting on the deck or cuddling with a dog for relaxation. Having an available bathroom is just the cherry on top. 😆
Linda hosts Stream of Consciousness Saturday. This week’s prompt is “drive.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!
I’m prone to motion sickness, but being the driver seems to help. Otherwise, I need to take medication on curvy roads, boats, or planes.

Same here, something about being behind the wheel settles my stomach. Now that my son is pushing 6’2″ I try to ride in the back to give him leg room and ugh, it’s so icky.

I remember Sunday drives. Not every week, not even all that often, but my dad would pile us in the car and off we’d go. I remember sometimes stopping for ice cream or at a farm stand to buy corn to have with dinner of cherries to have on the way home. I never knew if my dad had a plan, or if the rides were random, but we always enjoyed them.

Those sound like amazing outings. It’s been so fun reading everyone’s memories like this. 🙂

Yep we did Sunday drives. All of us piled in the station wagon, almost always to Concrete cemetery to my Mamaw’s grave. Lots of open space, fields for miles both sides of Hwy 87. It’s built up a little more now but not by much.

All these memories. It’s nice to see folks with strong ties.

I never did Sunday drives, but when I got older, I loved curvy roads with a groovy auto that could take them.

Driving zippy little roads when I owned my Miata was the best thing about that car. Funny, I don’t remember feeling carsick on those. Maybe because I was driving?

I have fond memories of Sunday drives, both when I was a child after my mother got her driver’s license and later in life with hubby. I got to play passenger in both scenarios, so I could gaze out the window, doze off and just be. It was lovely.

The passenger role is definitely preferable!

I think Sunday drives were a product of a time when there were country roads to be traveled, less traffic, more natural areas that were undeveloped. You know – “back in the day. . .”

Just starting doing these drives again. Definitely calming on the country roads

And I think we need all the calm we can find these days.

Oh yes, we went for Sunday drives and sometimes they were Saturday or weekday evening drives. It was up to dad, but I happily remember heading to the A&W for burgers and a root beer float, then driving the countryside to see herds of deer and whatever else we saw from the car. Dad would always make a point of letting us think we were lost, with a wry smirk on his face.
I understand your riding issues though. I have had lifelong motion sickness so no whoop-dee-doo roads for me either.

Spotting those herds of deer is the *only* thing that would get me into a car for a country ride. So peaceful!

it was a little before my time, at least in my family, and my middle sister and I were eternally carsick, so probably not an option my parents even considered

And I have a memory of gas being so expensive…with three kids I don’t think burning gas would have been a way my folks burned money.

An available bathroom (a clean one!) is always an added plus for anything!

Isn’t it?! 😆 And those backroad stations are pretty sketchy…

When we go together my husband drives. He likes driving on highways but I find them boring 😊 . I like driving in the town, changing gears, slowing down and so on. But now we don’t go out much because of lockdown. Praying for the better now.

I remember going for a drive, just for the fun of it. Usually my husband would be driving.
