What is your least favorite holiday side dish? (for any holiday)
Growing up I was convinced I didn’t like sweet potatoes but truth be told that might have been because my mom didn’t make them. Now that I’ve had a few versions they’re not bad. Living here in the south I’d have to say my “least favorite” (AKA “makes me throw up in my mouth a little”) side dishes are turnip or collard greens.
What is the ugliest or most tasteless decoration you’ve ever seen?
Listen, I try to take a very You Do You Boo approach to holiday decorations, I really do. But there’s this one house I drive by that has what looks like an enormous red plastic ribbon hung along the top of and down the sides of their porch overhang. It lights up at night which makes it look like they’ve gift wrapped their house. For whatever reason it irritates me.
What is a cherished or unusual (either or both) family tradition from your childhood? (This is the recycled Evil Squirrel question that got bungled by moi, and sounded like a packaging question. My bad.)
We baked cookies together, but they weren’t your typical sugar cookie cutouts. They were from old family recipes and made our whole home smell like Christmas joy.
You’re walking down the street, feeling great — what holiday song would be playing in the background? (aw, play along. I realize some of you prefer a very silent night. It is an option to pass on this question too. No offense will be taken).

I am with you on the distasteful sides. I still won’t eat sweet potatoes in any form. I was the one baking as a kid. I loved making a huge variety of cookies. Yummy . Happy holiday

I loved baking as a kid! I used to do lots as an adult, too, but going gluten free has killed it for me. We have a holiday where someone brings a sweet potato casserole and I’m able to take a single (small) scoop and enjoy it. That lasts me the whole year. 😆

Merry Christmas Laura all the way from Foggy Yorkshire. Why on earth has Tom Cruise made part of the new Mission Impossible here 🤣🤣

Thank you Laura for Sharing Your World. Good job on embracing the yam/sweet potato thing. Maybe you’re right, it’s the PREPARATION of those things that makes the difference. I’ve only ever encountered the mushy overly sweet version and I do not like them. Now I love steamed spinach, so I suspect that I’d like greens…AS LONG as they didn’t throw some onions in the mess ‘for flavor’. Never have had any greens though, this being out West and nowhere near the South. LOL That gift house sounds a tad overdone..but to each their own as you wisely point out! “Smelled like Christmas Joy”…what a lovely way to describe a very special tradition for y’all. My mother used to do that, and she’d make dozens of different kinds of cookies and homemade candies…it did smell like Christmas joy now that I recall on it. Hm. Well I have a scented candle for that..something called Hot Apple Winter Toddy (with bourbon). It makes my house smell pretty darned great! Have a very merry season Laura and here’s wishing peace for you and your family in the coming year!

Thank you so very much, Melanie. While I have very fond memories of those cookie days I’ve fallen down on the job but both of my siblings have carried on those traditions like gangbusters. My daughter expressed an interest in making sugar cookies, though, so I’ll be getting together the stuff so she can experience making cookies from scratch. We’ll see if she hangs in there for the whole thing. 😆 Wishing you and yours the best, Melanie.

i love ‘christmas is all around’ by billy mack from ‘love actually’ my fav christmas movie. i’m totally with you on the dislike of sweet potatoes and greens. over time i’ve learned to love sweet potatoes when left to their own devices and not mashed into something unrecognizable with sugar and marshmallows. baked or cut into fries are what i enjoy. greens have never gotten any better for me. happy christmas, laura –

Ooh, I forgot about sweet potato fries. I made those once in my air fryer and they were DELICIOUS. I haven’t done more because they were so hard to cut up but I might have to pull that recipe back out.
