“We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled. The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision…”
Justice Alito’s 2022 draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade
Nobody could expect the Constitution would implicitly protect a right to abortion seeing as women were considered property at the time. The concept that we might have healthcare options not just available but inalienable was inconceivable when the Constitution was written.
You know what the Constitution does say? The Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution states “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures shall not be violated.”
I am not secure in my person if the government can dictate my medical procedures.

Excellent points, Laura. I’m sure there are other examples of things the constitution did not cover because of the time it was written.

Which is why I’m flummoxed by the “strict constitutionalist” descriptor. How can one strictly adhere to concepts or laws governing a time when certain people were treated as less than human?

Well said Laura. We need all women to pull together now and turn out at the polls in November. It’s the only way.

This issue has been eye opening for me – a sad recognition of the government intervening where it should not. It’s changing my views in a few areas – and will affect how I vote this year.

I’m hoping it gets more people to the polls. This election is make or break for all of us.

I have never missed voting, but – now I wonder if it really matters. It seems politicians can promise anything, and perhaps truly want to keep their promises – although how do we know, really – but as long as we have this rabid partisanship, and the career politicians (like Mitch McConnell) and the stupid, power-hungry ones (like Ted Cruz), nothing is going to get done. Integrity seems to be a dream these days. I feel like my voice doesn’t matter, that it’s all corruption and greed.

I understand that feeling. I think it’s easy to lose hope when things have been so bleak for this long. I will tag in to say don’t lose hope, there’s strength in numbers and I refuse to believe the people (the regular people, not the politicians) will watch us go back decades.
**very important note, I may need you to remind me of this when my hope wears thin**
