Once upon a time there was a girl. One who ran all day long and drank from hoses and rode a banana seat bike with streamers on the handlebars. A girl whose skin grew warm to the touch in the summer sun and who ran like the wind.
Everything about that girl made sense in the sun, with her friends, on the soccer field. It made sense in the public library too, where it was cool and dark and filled with smells of the written word.
She was woefully unprepared for a transition from tomboy elementary to middle school madness and things only got more confusing from there.
Linda hosts Stream Of Consciousness Saturday. This week’s prompt is “once upon a time.” Start your post with “Once upon a time,” then write whatever comes to you, whether it be fact or fiction. Have fun!”
Great story, Laura. I think it had a happy ending.

Thanks, Dan. It’s what I think about now with our kids – you just can’t know what the future holds for you.

It is a familiar story. I still remember being ridiculed for wearing socks instead of nylons.

The things we use to mock one another. Honestly.

And yet at 68 I still remember the hurt.

My sister has a story about being forced to wear some sort of stockings. I’m too young to remember but when she tells it I can hear the hurt.

I could relate. Though I wasn’t much of a runner, I rode that banana bike like the wind. Middle School/Jr High was so awkward. Riding a bike with the wind in my hair all through high school helped.

I love this. I think finding those things that nourished us carried so many of us through.
