Lab tech: Have you ever had a bad reaction to a vaccine?
me: Yes.
The look on every lab tech’s face at this point translates to: wait, what? Then there’s a brief pause before they roll on to the next question.
Am I on the floor waiting for an ambulance? No. But I’m gonna need another way to explain losing 2-6 days to complete crappery every time I get a vaccine. I keep getting them because, y’know, science and such but damn, why does my body insist on reacting like I’ve injected it with the plague?
We’re currently almost 24 hours past round two of the shingles vaccine and woo, buddy, talk about past patterns predicting current behavior. We’ll take any thoughts and prayers in these trying times.
Laura, I can relate, which is why I try to have the minimum number of vaccines. I end up in the bed for at least 3 days after each one.

Ugh, I’m so sorry you deal with it too. I sort of feel like this will be an easier crisis crunch once I don’t have teens in the home. When I say I scour my calendar for a 3-day block without commitments I can’t move…😂

I too struggle with newer vaccines. My body doesn’t hate me with my reg flu each year, but I have started the pneumonia & it takes a couple days to get back to good. I will say that the first COVID vaccine, well, the second shot of the first one kicked my ever loving arse. I was down as in DOWN for nearly a month. The second & third COVID vaccines also knocked me down, but only for a few days. I get what you’re saying. I don’t think they are necessarily “bad reactions” to vaccines, rather they are just the reaction an immune-suppressed person has. I consider a ‘bad reaction’ ending in the hospital.

I’m always so sorry to hear that other people struggle too. The flu shot also kicks my butt but only for about 24 hours and considering what the flu felt like when I got it (twice over the last decade) – well, I’ll take 24 hours over that misery. One of my covid vaccines landed me in the ER where the nurses & doctors patiently explained that the vaccine didn’t cause my crushing chest pain and I was like well okay, cause & effect isn’t mattering right this moment, can we just make sure I’m not having a heart attack? 😂
And thank you so much for that last part. It will help the next time a health professional asks about reactions.

It truly is. I’ve heard that from *many* people but also that shingles is way worse so here we are.

Yup. And the reaction does go away. Shingles is forever.
