Riddle from the Middle

real life with a side of snark

Meet the mind behind the blog…

I’m Laura.  I grew up the middle child in a military family (Navy brat and proud of it, baby) which pretty much meant moving every three years or so.  Sure, it’s good cocktail party talk to say you were born in the Philippines and have lived on both coasts, but being the new kid in school over and over?  Not so great.

Imagine the first day of lunch in a middle school cafeteria – walking in with your tray or lunch bag, feeling like everyone’s staring at you, desperately searching for a friendly face.  Multiply that by a thousand days.  That’s being the new kid your whole childhood.  Good times.

It’s taken years to develop my finely honed snark skills, but I run with the big dogs now.  When your days are spent juggling sometimes-sassy kids with homework, a hectic household, and our two crazy dogs, some well-timed snark can be a lifesaver.

I have a finely tuned protective streak when it comes to my family and friends.  Given this, I’m well-versed in circling-the-wagons and pulling out the mama bear as needed.  I’ve been blessed with a sista-friend (you know who you are) I found late in life.  Thankful prayers have been sent up for someone who has just the right amount of multi-sarcasmic (shout out, DL) wit and snarkiness to be yin to my yang.

In my “real” life (because who counts those teenage jobs anyway) I’ve been a teacher (twice — it’s a long story), a receptionist, a customer service call rep (good times there), and now a stay-at-home mom.  For a while I got so caught up in being busy that I forgot the deepest part of myself, the part that’s been with me since middle school: the writer.  I’m determined to bring her out of hiding and into the light.

I like a great many things but have a few deep loves.

  • My family.  Because we are for real and forever.
  • Words.  And the art of stringing them together in just the right way so that your reader laughs or cries or spits out their coffee…that’s the best.
  • More words, the ones that come in books.  Put me in a shaded lounge chair with a cool ocean breeze and a few good novels…mmmmm….
  • Music, all kinds.  (Well, not really classical — sorry, I’m not that girl — but almost every genre out there.)  The very best kind may be the songs my daughter and I sing at the top of our lungs while in the car.
  • Photography.  I love taking pictures, especially of my kids when they’re feeling big emotions and have no idea I’m catching them.
  • My dogs.  Lord, I love these fur balls.  They are sweetness and comfort and unconditional love all the time.  Except for the times when my golden retriever is trying to kill me slowly by being a scamp; then she is the bane of my existence. Luckily, that feeling seems to fade no matter how many times she pushes my buttons.

Riddle from the Middle may touch on a lot of different areas, but I can promise that it will be real.  I don’t have much patience for painting shiny, happy pictures – I much prefer telling it like it is.

Thank you for letting me share.  Let’s go for a ride!

~ Laura

  1. Same here on many things. Moved too much as a kid and we weren’t even military! Family is number one. I too love photography and want to build up a pro-level portfolio but that’s another story. I’m interested in too many things. Writing and drawing are my deepest passions. Great blog!

    1. Those moves are something else, right? If I hear one more person describe them as “character building”… 😆 So glad you stopped by and shared a little about yourself!

  3. Hi Laura,
I am the oldest of three in a military family. Like you I’ve traveled all over the world which has given me a broader perspective on life and it’s challenges. For those things I can change, I do it. Those things I can’t change, I don’t worry about it anymore. And, for everything else I lift it up in prayer and let God take care of the rest. Thank you for stopping by my blog at “baldmanrandomrants”. My best to you and yours.

    1. Always an honor to meet another military family member! Growing up military had its challenges (which is a nice way of saying sometimes it sucked) but it definitely broadens perspective. I think a lot of things could improve if more people were able to experience life from another point of view. I appreciate you taking the time to say hi!

  4. Hi, Laura! Just stopping by to say thanks for the follow at my place. I’ve enjoyed reading your posts, and don’t know why I had not already followed you. I just forget to do that sometimes. You say you were a military brat (Navy)! Wonderful. I’m a military wife (Army) now retired, but can sure understand all the moving around from place to place. My kids were the ‘new’ kids at their schools, too. Well, happy blogging, and will wish you a lovely weekend! 🙂

    1. So glad to hear you’ve already been visiting! I do that, too — someone will pop up as a suggested blog and I’m all “wait, you mean I’m NOT following them already?!” Busy brains. Oh, and I think military spouses should earn some sort of degree for all the areas you have to excel in. Just saying. You have a great weekend, too!

  5. Being the middle child of a military family I can relate to being the new kid in school. My dad was in the Marine Corps for 20 years, and I lived on both US coasts during my childhood, and went to kindergarten on a naval base in Newfoundland, Canada. I also have two dogs (down from 5 which is a long story) and had a golden retriever who was my best boyfriend for over 10 years. I’m so glad to have discovered your blog through the SOC! Adding a little snarkiness (sp?) to my writing is one of my goals, so I’m looking forward to reading more!

    1. Wow, we really do have a lot in common! We middle military kids have to stick together. Sometime you’ll have to tell me that story about having 5 dogs — many days I feel like bringing more home, but I think my husband would stage a coup!

      1. Here’s the short version: After the divorce and a couple of yucky rebounds, I asked God to send me a partner who loved dogs, among other qualities. My high school sweetheart found me after 39 years of no contact. He had three dogs! I had 2. A year and a half later we were married and had 5 mostly geriatric dogs in a two bedroom house. We’re down to 2 dogs now, age 10 and 14.

  7. Thanks for the follow! I’ve been writing since I was young and recently got back into it. “I don’t have much patience for painting shiny, happy pictures – I much prefer telling it like it is.” Yup, that’s me, too. And I regularly dine on my foot as a result. I look forward to reading more of your posts. 🙂

    1. I’ve really been enjoying your pieces, Lynn. We’re lucky to have found our way back to such a great space! (And I’m always happy to meet someone who sticks her foot in her mouth as much as I do! 😏)
