I have a remarkable track record with birthday cakes.
I like to bake a cake for my kids’ birthdays. I think it’s because my mom always baked one for me, so it feels like one of the ways I can show them I love them. (Intellectually, I know this is ridiculous, that the kids don’t equate a homemade cake with love. And yet here I am, stuck in this cycle.)
At any rate, it seems like every time I’ve tried to stretch a little and do something just a bit extra, things blow up in my face. This would be my cake life lesson from Bear’s party this year.
Way cool decorating idea: Use melted Starburst for decorations. Melt 5 unwrapped (ha!) candies for 5 seconds. Knead then roll out into thin layer. Cut out shapes or letter to decorate your cake.
This is what Bear’s cake looked like right after I finished decorating it:
Awesome, right? I was super proud of myself.
Extremely important decorating detail (that was lacking from the website where I got the idea): Refrigerate cake until party.
I googled “should I refrigerate cake” and got a solid no, so I hid this one in our kitchen until party day. It was Saturday morning when I put the Starburst decorations on, and the party was Sunday afternoon.
This is what the cake looked like when I took off the wrap:
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!
Thankfully the kids were off jumping (more on that later) so there were no little ears nearby to hear the oaths uttered under my breath. After a couple of hours I grew to appreciate the Salvador Dali effect, but still…
Lesson learned, refrigerate cake.

It’s a beautiful cake! And, I think when your children are older and look back on those fabulous cakes that they will most certainly realize how hard you worked to make their birthdays special. That’s definitely love! 🙂
