“Digest”? On the week of Thanksgiving? Aw, Linda, you’re making it too easy. But considering we’re all in some sort of food coma right about now that’s pretty kind of you.

Nobody ever said I rolled easy, though. (If you listen closely you can hear BrightSide mutter, “well, isn’t that the truth.”)

I can’t remember when I first heard about Reader’s Digest but I know it was long before I saw a copy. Reader’s Digest is a bit like a great white shark – you know it’s out there, but unless you swim in certain waters you aren’t likely to run across one. And I didn’t. Swim in those waters, that is. My housemates were more likely to have copies of Glamour lying around.

Which means I probably ran into my first Reader’s Digest at the dentist’s office or someplace equally enthralling. Beggars can’t be choosers when you’re trapped in those plastic chairs waiting long, long minutes to be called back…I’ve been known to thumb through everything from Golf Digest to Good Housekeeping.

But I digress.

What I most remember is that it was miniature – about 5×7 or so, I think – kind of a tuck it in your purse and go sort of magazine. I don’t recall the articles being particularly challenging; I think they were just easy reading to pass the time, if you know what I mean.

Aw, I’ll just say it. Reader’s Digest was a grandma magazine. Or at least that’s how it struck me (in all my 20-something worldliness – bwahahahaha!). Believe it or not you can still subscribe today, so if you’re looking to digest something other than turkey this week…

See what I did there? See that? KILLING IT, man.

Linda hosts Stream of Consciousness Saturday. This week’s prompt is “digest. Use it any way you like.”
