Time to draw straws…
I’ve only heard that a few times in my life. I’ve heard it tons in tv shows and movies, usually accompanied by some high stakes music while someone gingerly plucks a “straw” from somebody’s tightly clenched fist. It isn’t always a literal straw — the hay kind, I mean. I guess it could be hay but it’s usually more organic to the scene. A bunch of toothpicks or blades of grass or some such thing.
It’s all very suspenseful.
Anyway, I said I’ve only heard it a few times in my life but darned if I can come up with an actual example. I was far more likely to be caught up in guess a number 1-10 or some such system. But I guess that’s neither here nor there when it comes to the prompt.
Drawing straws is kind of a random use of the prompt word. Drinking straws is far more applicable to my life. You’d be surprised by the number of straws in my kitchen drawer. There’s the handful of fast food straws pulled from bags over time, a pack of jumbo smoothie straws that will last a decade or more, and a collection of reusable straws. It’s all shoved in there next to the chip clips. Messy, yes, but useful.
This feels like a rather disjointed stream of consciousness but that’s just how it goes sometimes. May your Saturday be filled with low stress, non-straw drawing moments.
Linda hosts Stream of Consciousness Saturday. This week’s prompt is “straw.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!

Messy and usually jammed shut.

Ugh – the jammed shut part is so annoying!!

Your kitchen drawer sounds like the ones we had before we moved. But the new place is collecting plenty of things we might use one day or year. I’ve saved plastic spoons (but only in my favorite colors) and put them in a cup on the counter like a spoon bouquet I might never use.

Ooh, a spoon bouquet…maybe if they were out and visible people would grab and use them? It’s such a catch 22 — I don’t want to just throw them away but seeing them collect in a drawer makes me kind of rage-y. Maybe we’ll give your system a try!

“Messy, yes, but useful.” Story of life 💝. I’m not drawing straws today that for sure. Going with non- stress. Happy Saturday 🎉

Isn’t it though? Every once in a while I hit my limit and dump all the junk drawer stuff (or chip clip stuff) onto the kitchen island. It’s amazing what you find in those spaces! Have a great weekend.

Good use of the prompt and it gave me an opportunity to brag on my stainless steel smoothie straw. Love it.

Really?? I’ve heard of the stainless steel straws but you’re the first person I’ve known who’s used one. Thanks for the recommendation!

It did seem like the most fair solution at the time…

We have lots of straws here, too. Some from fast food places, some of those reusable ones, and then we buy packages of them. I use a straw for most everything I drink, except coffee. haha I remember though that my sister uses a straw for her coffee for some reason.
Oh drawing straws! Hadn’t remembered that. We used to do that a lot, when we were kids. Mostly for chore divisions settlements. haha 🙂

The do seem to multiply. Same with plastic silverware despite my telling every single takeout place I don’t need any. That drawer just seems to fill up way too fast. And I’ll admit your sister is the first person I’ve *ever* heard of who uses a straw with coffee.

You’re right about the drawer filling up with take out stuff, condiments, too! Yeah, coffee with a straw sounds strange to me, too. She said it’s so it won’t stain her teeth. 🙂

Ohhh okay then, that makes more sense. It’s just the idea of sucking something hot up into my mouth. I feel like I’d be more likely to burn the roof of my mouth that way.

Yeah, not for me, either. I tried it once and nope! 🙂

We too have lots of different straws. With small kids at home, we keep them so that they drink their milk/ smoothies

That’s a good solution for getting calcium into kids.
