1. Well alrighty then, let’s give this a shot.
2. I’m four weeks post-op from foot surgery and…wait. That’s not right.
3. It’s three weeks. Holy sh*t, it’s only been three weeks.
4. Insert deepest sigh here.
5. Trying again.
6. I’m three weeks post-op for foot surgery and there are a few things I know.
7. Thing #1: Elevation works.
8. Have you done something that made a healthcare person say rest, ice, and elevate? For all that’s holy, DO IT.
9. It’s annoying, yes, but it keeps the swelling down.
10. I like to think it speeds healing but have no scientific data to back that up, just gall and gumption.
11. Thing #2: It’s possible to sleep sitting up with a foot in a giant boot propped on two pillows. You wouldn’t think you could, but apparently you can.
12. Will wonders never cease.
13. And finally, thing #3: Quietly sobbing as you wait for pain meds to kick in is a seriously sad state of affairs at midnight.
14. Timing is everything applies to so many things, including pain management after surgery. Track your meds.
15. So that’s my three things here on Discoveries: Surgery Edition.
16. Like what I did with that fancy script there?
17. Other fun things have been happening as I lie on my couch, icing and elevating all the live long day.
18. I’ve contemplated the bookcase I’m facing.
19. The titles up there, the order they’re in, even the arrangements of non-book knick knacks are getting serious consideration.
20. You know it’s a slow day when you wonder for the umpteenth time if that candle should move down a shelf.
21. I also see no less than three books I could re-read but considering I’ve got half a dozen on my “please-please-please open and read me” pile that’s gonna wait a bit.
22. I still really love the painting above the loveseat. I can also see the two pieces we picked up in San Francisco and I love them as much as the day we wandered into that shop.
23. The tv is…well…tv-ing. Love it or hate it, tv can be an excellent distraction when feeling crappy.
24. It’s hawk season here.
25. Not so much that it’s more hawk-y than usual but most of the leaves have dropped so now I can see them swooping between the trees.
26. It’s the coolest thing about when weather changes and we lose the pretty green foliage.
27. So, Laura, let’s talk holidays.
28. Holidays? Well gee, let’s see.
29. Nobody got food poisoning from the Thanksgiving gatherings here. As far as I know, anyway.
30. Nobody fell down or threw up or burned themselves on the Sterno heaters.
31. People came, they talked, they ate, they went home. Let’s call it a win.
32. You know what we’re not winning? Christmas.
33. There is nary a decoration up in this house. NARY A ONE I say.
34. Not a single gift has been bought.
35. Not a single plan has been made.
36. If you’re thinking of asking about, well, anything December related my answer is gonna be not yet.
37. Food, gifts, Christmas card plans — not yet.
38. Travel plans, decorations, any dang thing you can think of — not yet. Or maybe not at all, who even knows at this point.
39. All I know is my foot hurts less than it did and I graduated from the Terminator walking boot to a recovery shoe so things are headed in the right direction.
40. Let the good times roll.
If it’s any consolation, it’s not feeling very Christmas-y anyway, so you could get away with doing nothing.

It’s hard but not impossible & I know I’ll be happy once I can wear any shoe I want without my foot hurting. We’re just gonna dig in here & keep going. Thanks for the encouragement.

Three weeks can feel like a long time, but it’s also a significant milestone in your recovery journey. Remember to listen to your body, rest when needed, and follow your doctor’s advice.
