Yes, it’s killing me that my title’s spelled incorrectly. Tuueeesssdayyyyyy also looks super weird but let’s move it along.
My first version was worse. For those wondering I’d originally gone with a more phonetic Toooosssdayyyyyy. You know, for the too of it all.
So it was wrong before, it’s still wrong now. Guess we’re embracing the wrong of it all today.
And after this long ass introduction I’m betting you expect some story about that year I did the spelling bee but joke’s on you, I could NEVER.
Voluntarily stand on a stage and get stared at while trying to spell? Nope, nope, nopeity, nope. I’m pretty sure my eyeballs would get stuck rolled upwards as I desperately searched for a correct spelling behind my forehead. I’m also certain my sweat glands would reach an overdrive that could reasonably threaten spontaneous drowning on stage.
Has a kid ever had a heart attack at the microphone? Because somehow that doesn’t seem nearly as impossible as it should.
So how can we bring this post full circle? Let’s share the first time I really banged up against a spelling list word. It was “people.” Turns out “people” was nearly my downfall.
Up until that word graced my spelling list it all seemed fairly straightforward. Did the lists require some studying? Sure, but it felt doable. Logical, even. Until “people.”
I just couldn’t get that stupid word down. It was the first one I’d run into that phonetically made no sense. You want me to spell [pee-pull] like [pee-oh-plea]? What on earth?!
And that’s the story of how I knew I was never meant to stand in a spotlight and spell. The End.
I can’t spell a word correctly before I write it down. If it looks right, then it probably is 😅

I think my spelling peaked in my twenties and it’s been downhill ever since

maybe so… I’d like to say perhaps it’s that the words have grown increasingly difficult over the decades. So it’s not so much the spelling that’s gone downhill as the vocabulary itself.😂

and sometimes the more I look at the word that I’ve used and spelled a million times before the more I question myself about its spelling

Same! Spellcheck has been a lifesaver but it does make me feel pretty deficient overall.
