Guns? Are you pro or con? Explain your point of view.
This is tricky to answer as is. I’m not inherently against guns so it feels weird answering “con,” but I suspect answering the spirit of the question means I lean more con than pro. Hunting for food? Not my jam but I get it. Hunting for sport? That’s a hard no for me. Taking an animal’s life so you can have a fun afternoon seems wrong. I’m strongly anti- personal ownership of automatic weapons because there’s just no need for one person to be able to unload that sort of firepower. I’d say if you think they’re fun to shoot then you ought to consider spending some time in the military.
As far as logistics go, I believe in: background checks and a waiting period for any type of gun sale, prohibiting gun ownership for convicted felons and domestic violence offenders, minimum age requirements for any type of gun ownership, required firearm training for those with concealed carry permits, and passing Red Flag laws so family members/police can ask a judge to temporarily block someone from possessing firearms if they’re a danger to themselves or others.
How would your country change if everyone, regardless of age, could vote?
I think it could be a good thing, especially right now. There’s an entire population of politically engaged young citizens who have strong opinions about what they need legislators to do for gun safety in America, but they’re forced to convince adults to vote on their behalf. They’re dying in their schools and streets while Congress refuses to even bring a debate on common sense gun legislation to the floor. Maybe the very real threat of being voted out of their jobs would convince legislators to represent all of their constituents.
What’s your cure for hiccups?
I drink water upside down from a cup. This only makes sense to people who’ve actually done it – I know because my kids have stared at me blankly when I suggest they try it themselves.
What’s the coldest you’ve ever been?
After spending most of my childhood living in Virginia and New Jersey – not the deep south or anything, but at least they’re south-ish states – we moved to Massachusetts for my senior year of high school. I was entirely unprepared for New England weather so I spent that entire year in a permanent state of shivering. That’s the longest cold period I’ve experienced, but the most intense cold was when we visited Canada. Skiing really isn’t my thing. Plus Canada. Brrr.

Different countries, different take on this. The U.K. has a big problem with knife crime. Many of us don’t get the importance of guns to some in America. I heard one chap talk about it’s part of the US historical tradition. Witch Trials was part of U.K. tradition but thankfully we stopped that.

Yeah, I’m REALLY not a fan of the “tradition” argument. There are too many examples of dumb things we’ve upheld throughout history in the name of Tradition. Ugh.

Okay, maybe not turkey — although one *could* argue that repeatedly eating tryptophan and carbs every year despite the fact that it puts us in a stupor is the definition of dumb.

perhaps it is still one of the lesser forms of many forms of dumb 🙂

I’m not exactly pro-guns, but I’m not anti-guns, either. I’m not into hunting or sports shooting, and definitely believe there are too many illegal guns causing too much mayhem. However – and it’s a big however – when my psycho neighbor tried to break down my door because I didn’t throw his kid’s cheap plastic toy back fast enough, I went out and got my pistol permit. Just in case. (The guy was certifiable, and definitely could blow at any time. It wasn’t the first incident.). But then we moved, and it’s not an issue any more. I’m keeping the gun and the permit, though – just in case.

Holy crap, THAT’S next level crazy. Because of course you should be all about hustling his toy back over. What the what. This makes some kind of sense, though – you got the permit after (presumably) a background check. I’d love to see a more consistent system across the states.

Oh, yes, there was a background check, a pistol permit course, a visit to the Pistol Permit Department, and an interview at the local police station (it was so hard not to be snarky during that interview – I was afraid they’d lock me up if my real personality came through). And it wasn’t just one toy – it was toys thrown over the fence every 5 minutes, with someone then immediately ringing the bell to make the cranky old lady go out in the yard to retrieve them. Enough was enough.

Your gun answer pretty well covers the situation. None of us need an attack drone, a battle tank, or a thermo nuclear weapon. When the right to bear arms interferes with the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness then it is time to sit down and adjust the situation.
As for the coldest I have ever been the answer tends to what is the coldest I could have been. I have gone winter camping with the Scouts. Camp Alaska is spending 24 hours outside in the middle of winter. Hike into the the camp roughly a mile from the cabins or cars. Bring all your gear on your back or a sled. Set up your emergency shelter or tent, like a visqueen tarp between two trees. It is a fun experience.

Camp ALASKA?!? Seriously?? Just the idea makes me cringe. 😮
The gun thing seems so common sense. I’m just at a loss for why we can’t do anything about this.

Excuse me? I use my battle tank for Walmart. Works a treat

Thanks Laura for Sharing Your World! You did make some very plausible points about the gun and voting questions…and I must agree. The young people (teens) are the ones who are inheriting this world that we’ve f*cked up. They’re dying because some idiot decided children were ‘the’ cool target. It’s horrible.

It’s amazing they haven’t risen & overthrown because it seems like nobody cares enough to do anything. 😦

Your spring is way ahead of ours, but ours is coming.
I wish the folks in Washington could approach the issues surrounding guns in a logical and comprehensive fashion – it’s why we elected them, to make hard decisions, not to hide from them. There are answers.

There are *totally* answers to this if you’re willing to look. It’s the unwillingness that makes me crazy.
Our springishness is underway – not in full swing but enough to make me see the warm mornings coming. It was 42 degrees this morning, high of 71 this afternoon, so a little too slingshot for my taste but we’ll get there. There are leaves on the trees behind our house and the dogwoods bloomed so lots of pretty to help with the daydreams. 🙂

Your answers are perfect, and I would love to steal them because I doubt I could speak so on point. But I won’t, I’ll stumble through them. Maybe tomorrow.
