It’s been a really, really long time since we’ve done it but ordering Chinese food used to be such a treat. Putting aside the yummy goodness inside the white containers they came in were so much fun.
At the risk of sounding weird (but seriously, when do I not) seeing a counter full of Chinese takeout containers was a little like Christmas morning. Those little white boxes with the tops folded in on themselves and a wire carry handle. We’d pop open tops, separating out the sticky white rice containers from the saucy dishes. Everybody had their own special order – sweet and sour chicken, Szechuan Beef, veggie fried rice, beef with broccoli – something they’d ordered just for themselves. Then the challenge of who was willing to share what kicked in.
Dinner would come and go but then there was the challenge of sneaking your sticky rice container into a hidden fridge space. Leftover Chinese was a treat but sticky rice put it over the top so we guarded those things like hidden treasure.
Well, this SoCS trended hard toward food and now I’m craving Chinese. Ugh.
Linda hosts Stream of Consciousness Saturday. This week’s prompt is “container.” Use the word “container” any way you’d like. Or think about a container of some kind and write about it. Enjoy!
I and my spouse love Chinese food especially spring rolls, at this very moment we’re eating Chinese fried rice with salt and pepper squid as I had a craving for Chinese food so we ordered takeaway.

It really makes for a wonderful takeout dinner. 🙂

Chinese food is a tradition in my fiancé’s brother’s family.

One of our restaurants is super good at labelling stuff like gluten and additives. They do a decent free range as well.

That’s fantastic! Pre-covid days I used to love enjoying a dinner out at a restaurant but it’s hard to find one with decent options. It’s why I’m torn sometimes — I can make delicious (and safe) food at home but there’s all the work involved. Boo.

I so remember take out Chinese. Great memory, Laura.

I miss Chinese food. Definitely hungry now. We have some great Chinese takeouts near us but we just haven’t been able to get to them.

I had to give it up because there’s no way of knowing which sauces have gluten in them. I’ve gotten pretty good at homemade stir fry but there’s something just not the same.

Great response to the prompt. I’m going to need to have Chinese food next week.

Pretty sure we’ll all be supporting the industry soon. 😉

Yummy. I miss Chinese food too. The place we frequented closed down in 2018, way before covid. We never really found a good replacement. After momma Hsui no one else could compare. Roast pork with vegetables was my favorite! We had so hoped her kids would take over after her retirement but in hindsight I’m glad they didn’t have to experience this.

It’s been so rough on the small local restaurants! We’ve tried to pick up gift cards from the ones we love so they can stay in business. This is an especially stressful time for them.

I miss Chinese food! And Thai food!

So true. I’ve actually picked up some rice noodles at the grocery store so I can start experimenting at home.

I make spring rolls, which I love and hubby makes stir fry. I have not even attempted a Thai curry, though. Panang curry is my very favorite!

Wow, really?? Is it hard to make spring rolls? I would love to try those!

Not hard. Takes a bit o get a handle on rolling them. The key is ‘Mise en place’ ( yes, I learn fancy stuff by watching “Worst Cooks in America”) because you want to work fairly wuickly. We love them!

Ooh, that IS super fancy — I had to google. 😆 Totally agree, though. Stir fry moves fast so ingredient setup is the key. Maybe I’ll try!

Yummmm! I just had some Chinese food yesterday. I bought vegetable lo mein and pork with pineapple. With this order a second entree was offered. So I chose beef and broccoli, which we haven’t tasted yet.

Too many sauces contain gluten so I had to give it up. I’ve got some good homemade recipes but still…there’s something about Chinese food from the restaurant that’s just YUM.

You’re so right. The thickening agent is either flour or cornflour. Both have gluten.
