What news event do you vividly remember hearing about as a child, and where were you?
Diana and Prince Charles were married. I remember people who got up at four in the morning so they could watch – not me because even back then I was distinctly anti-early morning events but I poured over the photos and was glued to the tv later on. She was like a princess come to life that day, her long train trailing up the cathedral steps, blushing sweetly on that carriage ride. We’ve just finished watching the latest season of The Crown and it’s been a strange dichotomy to absorb.
What is a Christmas song that makes you cringe?
“The Christmas Shoes.” Just…no. The little boy. Holding the shoes. To buy for his dying mama. I just can’t, man.
What is one place you shop(ped prior to Covid) that might have surprised people?
Is it weird that I’m struggling to remember where I shopped pre-Covid? Seriously, I’m at a loss here. And when I do think of places they’re totally boring, run of the mill, not very surprising places to boot. Anyone shocked to hear I loved wandering through Target? Meandering through PetSmart? Ooh! I’ve got one! Some of you might be surprised to hear I could lose ninety minutes in an Ulta seeing as I’m not exactly the super stylish type.
What is your least favorite holiday side dish?
So it’s not technically a dish but there was my first year at a family gathering where I mistook the beets for slices of cranberry sauce. That was unpleasant.
Share something heart warming that’s happened to you lately.
The kids made a run to the store this week for goodies – some Ben & Jerry’s and cookie dough, to be exact – and actually brought surprises back for BrightSide and me. Without prompting. [cue wide eyes] Look, it’s not like my kids are obnoxious but like most teens they’re not always the most perceptive individuals on the planet. I must have really looked like I could use a pint of ice cream that night.

I had to laugh at the beets for slices of cranberry sauce thing. Fortunately, I enjoy both.

Thank you. My whole face must’ve lit up when she gave it to me because my daughter said “well mom, I remember that time I went to the store and I didn’t get you anything so I really wanted to bring you something this time.“ She’s a good egg.

Thanks Laura for Sharing Your World! You raised your children ‘right’ that’s evident from them being thoughtful when you didn’t expect it. How sweet! The beets mistake is really funny (as a story), I’m sure it didn’t taste that way. There you were all poised for the tart sweetness of cranberry jelly and you got the pickled sourness (If they were pickled beets) of beets instead. *urp* Ugh!! I was nineteen or so when Princess Diana and Prince Charles tied their knot. I had a neighbor who was a total Anglophile, and who watched their courtship and subsequent marriage with total fascinating. I was ‘Meh. Another bunch a rich folk whom I don’t know and will never meet…yeah.” *insert eye roll* I was so not impressed. But you did something unique with that question – you’re the first to share a POSITIVE event (didn’t end well, but who knew at the time?) instead of some horrible natural disaster or violence for a memory! Good for you!! Thanks again Laura and have a great week!

Isn’t that interesting! The FIRST first one I thought of was the Berlin Wall coming down but that didn’t quite feel like “child” enough. That’s a positive one too…hmm, that seems unusual for me.😆

Laura, I like most food, but if I mistook cranberry sauce for beets, that would be a run from the table moment. We love old book stores in small towns. We miss our little excursions to small towns, especially the ones in the mountains. As for events, I remember the Challenger explosion as we were out to lunch during work and kept hoping against our own eyes that the astronauts survived. I was too young for JFK, but do remember MLK and RFK getting murdered. Sorry to end on a somber note. But, I do remember Neil Armstrong’s walk on the moon. Keith

I remember the Challenger explosion. I’ve tried explaining to my kids what it was like to be watching that horror show go down in school – those poor teachers, they really had to handle a shock that day.

Laura, it was a sad day, indeed. Then, it happened again about twelve years later when it was coming back to earth. I think that was the Columbia. Keith
