When you go on vacation, do you like to sample the local cuisine, check out the sights, or laze on the beach?
I feel like I’m a combination of all three. We went on a trip to Italy once that was nonstop sightseeing and I was exhausted when we got home so now I like to build in a fair amount of relaxing. I do love enjoying local food though, and checking out the sights is worthwhile. If I got all technical about it I’d say I’m a balance of 20/20/60 for these factors.
Have you ever been away on a vacation with friends rather than family?
Once or twice. Most of our vacations have either been our nuclear family or with one of our extended families.
Would you prefer a cruise or coach tour holiday?
No to the cruise ships, absolutely not. Maybe someday I’ll be willing to roll the dice on seasickness again but it’s hard to imagine. Ironically, I hate a bus too but those coach ones look pretty comfortable. Plus there’s no waves to bob up and down on so it’s coach tour for the win.
Self catering, or full board where all meals are included/provided?
Full board (typically called all-inclusive where we’ve stayed) has been the lowest stress vacations for us. You unpack your bags, lock your wallet in the safe, and don’t have to worry about having it on you for the rest of the trip. I can see how self catering makes more sense if you spend a lot of time exploring the area you’re in, though.
Gratitude:
BrightSide and I are celebrating thirty years of marriage today. Three decades is wild, man. We’ve been married for longer than half my lifetime and that’s just crazy cakes. My deepest gratitude isn’t that we’ve been married for thirty years. It’s that I found someone who has loved me through all of my stages and who allows me to love him through his. We’re pretty lucky.

Congratulations and happy anniversary!
I’m with you on the vacation combo – a little touring, a little sampling local cuisine, and lots of lazing on a beach or at a pool. I have only gone to one all-inclusive resort, and that was in March when my daughter and her husband took me with them to Puerto Vallarta. It was great, but I also really enjoyed the trip my daughter and I took to a non-all-inclusive resort in Costa Rica last summer, and we had the beach, the pool, lots of free breakfasts at the resort, and wonderful dinners at local restaurants.

Thank you Carol! I love how breakfasts at resorts have become a standard. When traveling we’ve found getting a decent meal to start off the day does a world of good. I’m betting our kids were sick and tired of hearing us say “fill up at breakfast!” but knowing how to use your resources (like included hotel breakfasts!!) is a solid life skill. 🙂

I’m with you about a combo of food, sights, beach. I couldn’t do just one exclusively. Never been on a cruise and only on one coach tour. Never been to an all-inclusive resort either. Fascinating questions.
Happy Anniversary! You two look young and happy in your photo.🥂

We’ve spent several vacations at an all inclusive resort. I always said they were great for the kids — when they’re little they want to snack all day, when they’re tweens & teens they eat all day, it made that part so much easier. Then we went on a “normal” vacation and I realized **I** like to snack when I’m hungry. 🫣🤣
And thanks, Ally. I look at that photo and think we were just BABIES, how did they let us get married??😂
