I was poking around looking for a blog prompt when I stumbled onto John Holton’s post. Let’s give Thursday’s writer’s workshop a try. Thanks for hosting, John!

This week’s prompts:

  1. Write a post inspired by the word snack.
  2. Write a post in exactly 13 sentences.
  3. Write a story starting with the line “Flesh-colored yoga pants were far worse than even he feared.”
  4. What or who are you always willing to make time for?
  5. If it’s raining outside, what activity do you most want to do?
  6. What are your favorite five words at the moment?

If it’s raining outside I turn into the snuggliest house bum there ever was. We’re talking gold medal level homebody skills.

The absolute best naps happen while it’s raining. There’s something about the cloud cover that dims the day enough to make sleep appealing. The gentle hum of rain on the windows/roof lulls me into a space that I imagine is how butterflies feel in the cocoon — enclosed, warm, comforted, and eased into rest. Give me an oversized, remarkably soft blanket and a sweet kitty and I’m down for the proverbial count.

Rain also makes for great baking weather. The smell of cookies or warm bread baking makes the whole house inviting, sort of a small piece of heaven tucked into the rainy weather. On the flip side it could be great chili weather, too. Get the ingredients loaded into the crockpot around lunchtime and you’ll have an afternoon house filled with a savory smell that makes me cheer on the dinner hour. Whether I fall into the sweet or savory camp really depends on the day.

So in the end I guess my answer is when it’s raining outside I most want to stay in my home.
