John Holton is our host for Writer’s Workshop. Here are the prompts for 10/23/25:
- Write a post based on the word moment.
- Write a post in exactly eight (8) sentences.
- Write a story starting with the line “If only she hadn’t bought the red one.”
- Tell us about your plans for the holidays.
- Tell us how the real world affects your writing.
- What is your least favorite genre of books? Why don’t you like it?
If only she hadn’t bought the red one.
Her mama said red skivvies are the devil’s plaything, that only wanton women wear red bras and panties. As if a color has a chokehold on what is and isn’t acceptable in humanity. As if red is the downfall of decent humans right and left.
Oh. Wait. There’s an argument to be made about the sea of red trucker caps…but I digress.
They had a great sale on underwear and she took advantage of the bargain. If only she’d stuck with neutral or pastel or a nice simple navy…If only she’d decided she wanted the most nondescript, least distinctive underwear on the planet…If only she’d paid better attention while doing her last load of laundry…
Then maybe half her socks wouldn’t be pink right now.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Loved this, Laura! Quick-witted, very snappy!
I remember someone criticizing me years ago, for a stunning pair of red pumps I wore to an event. They felt the need to call them “hooker heels”. I don’t think I ever wore them after that.

Thanks, Patty! I’d forgotten all about it but I’ve heard that phrase hooker heels too. I get pretty angry when I think about all the ways we get judged — don’t get dolled up and you’re boring or lazy or just plain ugly; show up too fancy for someone’s taste and now you’re trashy or a hooker. I spent a lot of years letting other people’s judgements shape my behavior. No more.

In our house, the washing machine is like a magic spell, the colours going in might not be the colours coming out.

Right? I tell myself whatever, at least they’re clean…

Hahaha this is perfect. 🤩 My Mamaw said the same about women who wear red shoes. She was none too happy with me either so bought some. These days every time I sport my red Converse, I think of her.

Red shoes is a new one for me but I guess it’s the same sentiment. Love the red Converse!

It is a tragic moment for me. 😂 My daughter just laughed it off when she did it — I aspire to her level of chill…

Good one! 😆 I wasn’t sure where this was going, at first.
Red is my favourite colour, but not when it comes to “those” hats!

Same. And that moment when you pull something out of the washing machine with a pink patch is the absolute worst. I’ll avoid red t-shirts at all costs🤣
