Valentine’s Day is a tricky holiday. I could go on about creating a holiday to profit off love and all that, it’s what I would have raged about in my thirties. I still don’t love the corporate marketing angle but the thing is I don’t love the über focus on romantic love.

Disclaimer: I do indeed love my husband until the ends of the earth. He’s a far better man than I deserve — just kidding, it’s just a saying, I know I deserve to be loved by a wonderful human being — and he deserves a day to hear that. Except we tend to say that stuff year round so February 14th is just a good excuse for chocolates.

Anyway.

I wish Valentines Day was universally more celebrated as a general love holiday. Less “do you have someone to love/date/marry/have children with/grow old with/loovvvvveeeeeeeeeeeee” and more how are you blessed by love in your life. Less “poor soul doesn’t have a date on Valentine’s Day” and more who’s got your back at the drop of a hat.

Friends, family, neighbors, teachers, coworkers, that person who lives with their heart wide open and their soul front facing…there are so many ways to give and receive love, all of which make the world a much better place.

I’d like more of that, please.
