Further proof that no matter how long I live in this state I will never be truly southern:
After almost 20 years of marriage and mystery, I got an e-mail from BrightSide’s mother this morning that finally explained the rolls and Karo syrup riddle. It turns out that this is a “fill-up dish” thing, not a dessert like I’d always assumed.
Note: a “fill-up dish” is something I’d never heard of before BrightSide, either.
Just in case you were wondering: If there wasn’t enough meat, beans, and potatoes to fill everyone up for dinner then they’d finish the meal with bread and Karo syrup or molasses. (Can I just have a moment to say ick…but I’ve never been a fan of molasses.) That way everybody’s belly got full.
And this concludes our southern schooling for today. (Thanks, mom!)
I like molasses — but with bread? I don’t think so. I love molasses cookie and molasses in milk instead of chocolate syrup.
