I was never a big fan of Peter Pan.
I mean the dog was adorable and Tinker Bell was cute but the eldest sister vibes were vibing and those boys were a wee bit annoying. But Captain Hook? Nope nope nopity nope.
First of all, the hook was terrifying. Why would you scare children so much that seeing someone in real life without a hand made you scrinch up in fear? (Y’all get the meaning of scrinch, right? Because it’s the first thing that popped into my head and then there was no getting rid of it.) In our tiny, underdeveloped brains it turned every veteran with a prosthetic into a scary bad guy and that’s kind of crappy.
Captain Hook’s overall demeanor didn’t help. All the scary, all the KILL THEM…the destroyer of childhood delight and goodness. I mean, I know he’s the bad guy and all, it’s just a little over the top.
Then again, I was pretty traumatized by Lord of the Flies so I might not be the best judge of this.

You’ve surfaced what my subconscious has always felt about Hook. The witch in the Wizard of Oz was almost as bad. Either I never read/saw the Lord of the Flies, or I blocked it out. No longer interested. Nopity Nope.

They should do a study on reactions to Disney characters over the years.

Right?!! I had a terrible time reading that novel. When it was assigned to my teens I was like forget it, let me check out the Cliff notes so I can talk about the book with you.

Funny, as a kid I remember the flying part more than anything…then when I saw ‘Hook’ as an adult with my own kids and loved it for the shear joy of childhood delight contrasted with Peter becoming a Pirate as an adult. Your point about the translation of the hook and peglegs of pirates to humans with prosthetic devices as kids is well-taken, tho. 😦

I’d totally forgotten about Hook! I do remember liking that one and yes, the flying scenes had a joyful freedom to them that really screamed childhood.

Disney really did a number on us. At least the parents weren’t dead in this one because the number of movies with tragic child characters…😳

I think Captain Hook was the comic relief 😂

Probably. I think my child brain locked onto the bad guy and made him larger than life in my mind.

That happens when children hear a story.

Maybe Pegleg PEte would have been a better choice 😉

I used Captain Hook today too! It was the first thought that popped into my brain. And yes, scrinch makes sense. I think the part of Peter Pan that always drew me in was that lost boys. As a lost girl I so related. Wild and unsupervised mostly …. And that tick-tock crocodile — oh my word.
