I mentioned in a previous post that we killed Santa on Maundy Thursday this year. (Please note: that is just my maudlin sense of humor. I don’t actually believe we killed Santa or his spirit.)
As I was panicking about how to handle the kids’ questions, a friend told me she’d found a letter on the internet that was very helpful when she talked with her son. I don’t know if this is the same one she used, but it’s the first one I found when I searched for “Santa letter and faith” and it really spoke to my heart. I modified it a little for my kids and gave one to each after we talked about the real Saint Nicholas and how he started showing the spirit of Christmas to the world.
Believing in yourself, your friends, your family, and the power of love? A Santa who is love and magic and hope and happiness in the world? Yep, we’re 100% on his team, and now our children have been invited into the fold, too. We found this a beautiful way to explain joyful hearts that carry on the spirit of Christmas today.
In case you’d like to read it, here is the original author’s letter to her daughter.
I thought it was a beautiful way to handle it (and was so grateful for the help!). Bear was so sweet — she put it in her “special box” so someday when her own kids ask the question she could use it. LOVE. 🙂

This letter is beautiful. The topic was approached by my daughter this year with the Easter bunny. But she quickly let it go and moved on. It hit me then that this conversation will probably be happening soon…maybe this next Christmas as she will be 9. I’m so worried and I think I may just use this letter. Thank you!
