I can’t remember the last time anyone would have looked at me and said I towered over anything. Maybe when I was teaching elementary school, but I think that’s it.
I’m not a short girl. Or maybe I mean I’ve never thought of myself as a short girl? Or maybe that I wasn’t a short girl overall. Average height for as long as I can remember, that was me. A steady 5’5″. Well, 5′ 5 and a 1/2″ for the longest time, but I digress.
Meeting my husband made me feel pretty short. His dad was tall, too, and his sister’s husband (well, boyfriend back in the day) was even taller still. I’d gone from feeling solidly average to a wee bit on the puny side. Standing in that crowd really drove home the point of people towering over me. Or so I thought.
In reality I was just preparing to be the matriarch because I am now officially always the shortest in the room. My daughter only has an inch or two on me. BrightSide is tall as ever but now my son is a solid foot taller than me. Ain’t nobody arguing semantics of “tower” when I stand close to him.
We’re a motley crew and I love it.
Linda hosts Stream of Consciousness Saturday. This week’s prompt is “tower.” Use it as a noun, use it as a verb, use any way you’d like. Have fun!

I am a foot taller than my wife. There are still times I forget that her arms are also shorter than mine. I’ve been reading here a long time. Being towered over lately doesn’t seem to have changed things.

Why thank you, Dan. 🙂 I find it oddly reassuring that though I currently stand at almost munchkin proportions to my son he still heaps a healthy dose of respect on my name.

I was 5ft 6 when in the Navy and then dropped to 5 4 or so I thought. Then dr office checked and I was 5 5. I was so happy. Smile. But im almost shortest in family of 6 siblings. Smile

Dropping an inch sounds much more reasonable, I can see why the new height results would make you happy. 🙂

Interesting for sure how we start at one height and at some point get shorter. I was always 5/5 and last I was measured it was 5/4. But I was a little taller than my parents! They always called me tall, so I could reach things for them. Now my grandaughter is taller than me and she is just 12 🙂

Isn’t it interesting? I held onto that extra 1/2 inch (5feet 5 AND A HALF inches thankyouverymuch) for years then finally decided what did it matter? Funny what we zero in on.

You’re absolutely right about attitude. The benchmark in our family was be taller than grandma. At that age, us cousins didn’t realize that topping 4’11” was not tall. We saw we were taller than our matriarch, and it was thrilling to think we had as much strength as she did.

“us cousins didn’t realize that topping 4’11” was not tall” has me giggling! I remember how being tall like the grownups shifted my entire perspective. There was an air of invincibility to it.

My dad stood over six feet tall, and my mom was under 5 feet. She often said, “Good things come in small packages.” I hope you and your motley crew have a great weekend!

Your mom was 1000% right! I often say something similar when I get too much grief for being the tiniest tot. 😁 Hope you have a wonderful weekend too!

I used to be 5 feet, 5.5” but have lost almost 3 inches due to spinal discs erosion.

Three inches is a big change, Sadje. 💛

It is! It used to be a depressing thought in the beginning, but I’ve learned to live with it. I am taking supplements to prevent further loss.

I’m so happy there’s something you can take to help hold further loss at bay.

The Producer is five feet tall and at times towers over me. Wishing you a pleasant weekend, Laura.

This is an excellent point because often the tower is in the attitude. 🙂

At least you’re consistent. 🙃And this is more along the lines of what I’d always thought of as short — the men in my childhood family are about 5’9″ so 5’5″ felt average, then I married into a family with men showing up over 6′ and they were like nope, you’re short.
